Hi!
I’m on the free Cursor plan and wanted to try the new GPT‑5.1 Codex Max model.
In the model picker it says “This model is free until December 11, 2025”, but when I try to use it I get the message:
“OpenAI’s latest models are currently only available to paid users. Please upgrade to a paid plan to use these models.”

Auto / MAX Mode / Multiple Models are all turned off, I manually selected GPT‑5.1 Codex Max.
Could you check my account and enable the free Codex Max promo for it?

Steps to Reproduce

Open Cursor on a free plan account.

Open any project and go to the model selector.

Manually select GPT‑5.1 Codex Max (it shows “This model is free until December 11, 2025”).

Make sure Auto, MAX Mode and Use Multiple Models are all turned off.

Try to send any prompt using GPT‑5.1 Codex Max in the chat/agent.

Observe that instead of running the model, Cursor shows the message:
“OpenAI’s latest models are currently only available to paid users. Please upgrade to a paid plan to use these models.”

Expected Behavior

When GPT‑5.1 Codex Max is selected on a free Cursor plan during the promo, the model should run normally without showing the “OpenAI’s latest models are currently only available to paid users” message and without requiring an upgrade to a paid plan. It should behave like a truly free model for the duration of the promo (until December 11, 2025).

I used GPT‑5.1 Codex Max (marked as “This model is free until December 11, 2025”) on a free Cursor plan.

For AI issues: add Request ID with privacy disabled

Request ID: not shown in the error message.

Additional Information

I’m located in Russia and using Cursor on the free plan only to test GPT‑5.1 Codex Max during the promo.​

Other models (e.g. GPT‑5.1, Opus 4.5, Gemini 3 Pro) work as expected on the same account, but only GPT‑5.1 Codex Max shows the “latest models are only available to paid users” message.​

I attached a screenshot of the model picker showing that GPT‑5.1 Codex Max is marked as free until December 11, 2025, together with the error message.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

This might be a promo limit on the free tier. We need precise details to verify your entitlement.

Please send:

  • The Request ID of the failed attempt: in chat, click the top-right menu > Copy Request ID. If Privacy Mode is on, temporarily turn it off, retry, then turn it back on
  • Console logs: Help > Toggle Developer Tools > Console tab, then reproduce the error and take a screenshot

Quick checks:

  • Sign out of Cursor and sign back in
  • Create a new chat and try again
