When using Composer 2.5 as the selected model, opening a new tab automatically switches the model to Grok 4.5 without any user action. The selected model is not preserved across new tabs.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Cursor IDE.
  2. Select Composer 2.5 as the chat model.
  3. Start a conversation.
  4. Open a new chat tab.
  5. Observe that the model automatically changes to Grok 4.5.

Expected Behavior

The selected model (Composer 2.5) should remain unchanged when opening a new tab. The IDE should preserve the user’s selected model instead of automatically switching to Grok 4.5.

Hey, thanks for the report. This is a known issue in the current rollout, in a new chat the model can switch to Grok 4.5 by itself even if Composer 2.5 is selected. We’re tracking it.

What you can do right now:

  • Before starting work in a new chat, check the model indicator and switch back to Composer 2.5 or Auto manually if needed. The switch happens when the chat opens, so a quick check before you start helps avoid extra usage.
  • In the model settings, you can set the default model so Cursor keeps your last choice, an option like Last Used. That way the model stays the same across new chats.

If this caused usage on a model you didn’t pick, it’s best to email [email protected] so they can check your account.

If the model switches again after you manually switch it back, reply here. I’ll post an update in the thread as soon as we have one.
