Personalized Auto Mode

Feature request for product/service

AI Models

Describe the request

I would love to see a feature that allows users to select a custom pool of models for Auto Mode to choose from. Currently, Auto Mode operates as a black box, selecting models without considering the user’s budget or specific preferences. On the other hand, manually locking down a single model breaks the workflow, as it forces me to constantly switch models, modes, and speeds for different tasks, which makes the conversation with the agent slow and high-friction.A personalized Auto Mode would solve this by letting us whitelist a handful of models and speeds we are comfortable with. Cursor could then automatically route easier tasks to the lighter, more cost-effective models, and escalate to the heavier models only for challenging builds, but strictly staying within our predefined selection. This would provide the perfect balance between automated efficiency and predictable budget control.

Operating System (if it applies)

Windows 10/11

Hey, thanks for the detailed feature request. The idea is clear and well explained.

Right now, the model pool in Auto Mode is controlled on Cursor’s side, and there’s no way to customize it per user. A personalized whitelist with budget-aware routing within a chosen set is a reasonable request. I can’t share an ETA or guarantee it’ll happen, but I’ve noted the request.

If there are any updates in this direction, I’ll post them in the thread.

Hello Dean,

Thanks for your quick reply. It is great that you think it is a good idea.

I imagine it can be quite a challege to build a good model selector that has dynamic alternatives, so even if you decide to include it, sure it can be a while before it is shipped.

Nevertheless, it would be great if you can give us updates through this thread. Thanks for that.

Regards!
