Plan mode in JetBrains Rider

Feature request for product/service

Describe the request

I’ve been enjoying plan mode of your plugin for JetBrains Webstorm quite a lot and thought I could do the same in Rider. But there is no plan mode there.

Operating System (if it applies)

Windows 10/11
MacOS
Linux

Hey, thanks for the report. Good news: plan mode isn’t WebStorm-only. It’s available in all JetBrains IDEs, including Rider, via the ACP integration. If you can’t see it, it’s most likely a plugin or IDE version mismatch.

Try this:

  • Update Rider to 2025.3.2 or newer. That’s the minimum version for Cursor ACP.
  • In the AI Chat panel, open the agent selector, choose Install from ACP Registry…, find Cursor, then update or reinstall it.
  • After that, Plan should show up in the mode picker next to Agent and Ask.

One note vs WebStorm or the Cursor app: in JetBrains, the plan isn’t rendered inline like in the desktop Cursor app. Instead, it’s written to a file at ~/.cursor/plans/*.plan.md. So the mode works, it just looks different.

If Plan still doesn’t show up in Rider after updating, share your Rider version and your Cursor agent version and I’ll take a closer look.

Hey, thanks for the response. I followed your instructions but I still can’t see the Plan mode. Am I not seeing something?

Plan mode definitely exists in Rider. It works for me on the same version, so the cause is somewhere in your local config.

Key point: in JetBrains IDEs, the mode switch doesn’t show up right away. Open the Cursor chat, send any message like hi, and finish auth if it asks. After the agent replies, look to the left of the input box next to Cursor. You should see an Agent / Plan / Ask switch there.

If the modes still don’t show up after the first message, tell me and we’ll compare your setup with WebStorm where Plan works for you. I’m interested in the AI Assistant plugin version and the Cursor agent version in both IDEs.

Ok this is a bit weird. After entering sending a message it actually appeared. Even when I open a new chat, it’s there right away. So I guess I’ve never used the Cursor plug in Rider until now and the login wasn’t done I guess.
