Please clarify Cursor Pricing Pro Plan, does it has unlimited auto mode messages allowed or is there any limit?

Hello, could someone please clarify the message limits for the Cursor Pro Plan?

According to the documentation, the pricing page mentions approximate limits based on usage data:

Pro: ~225 Sonnet 4.5 requests, ~550 Gemini requests, or ~500 GPT-5 requests

Pro+: ~675 Sonnet 4.5 requests, ~1,650 Gemini requests, or ~1,500 GPT-5 requests

Ultra: ~4,500 Sonnet 4.5 requests, ~11,000 Gemini requests, or ~10,000 GPT-5 requests

Does this mean that after sending around 200–300 messages in Cursor, I would hit the limit and need to upgrade my subscription? I also read that daily Agent users typically need to spend around $60–$100/month in total usage so does this confirm that we need to then upgrade it?

However, I have also read in some places that the Pro Plan offers unlimited messages in Auto mode. Does that mean we can still use Auto mode even after reaching the request limits for specific models?

I am quite confused about how this works and would really appreciate clarification before subscribing. Thank you!

Auto Mode is no longer unlimited on any plan unless grandfathered into it.

I was using Cursor Pro last year which they offered unlimited prompts, but I stopped programming for a while and started again, does this mean Cursor would still offer unlimited prompts or not?

Unlimited Auto is only for annual subscriptions that were started before September 15th. However, gpt-5-mini is unofficially unlimited for subscribed users (from my experience).

Does anyone have experience getting grandfathered in? I’ve been using Cursor every day for a year on the unlimited auto plan, and it was perfect. However, this morning it suddenly switched to usage pricing. It’s not only frustrating because I’ve been an avid follower and have used it every waking moment of my life on auto, but all of a sudden my charges are already spiking up—$25 in just a few hours. I didn’t know about this pricing change until today.

Your annual subscription has probably ended and Cursor IDE has not informed you about any changes, which have already occurred at least twice in a year :smiling_face_with_sunglasses::+1:

I signed up to monthly last month to pro+ and it included auto mode unlimited for free

The previous month I was on the pro plan and it also had auto for free.

I’m pretty sure there are “hidden limits” where it starts to dumb the model down based on your usage. I have a forum thread where I documented my usage and the models auto gave me for the last 2 weeks of using it.

I got sonnet 4.5 for every chat regardless of how hard the request was - so it’s not “auto best model for the task” - instead it is “auto best model based on how expensive the user becomes”.

Now that I’m hitting what I think are the plan hidden limits I’m getting codex and occasionally 4o - but I never once got either model for 15 million input/output tokens over the last 2 weeks. It’s only now that I’ve gone over 15 million that I get these models.
