Pro User – Still Getting Model Upgrade Prompts After Just a Few Requests

Describe the Bug

I’ve been dealing with this issue for the past 3–4 days, and it’s getting really frustrating.

Despite having a Pro subscription, I keep getting prompted to switch to higher-tier models (like Opus or GPT-4 Turbo) after only 3–5 simple prompts. I’ve already tried clearing my browser cache, logging out and back in, and even using a different browser — but nothing has helped.

I also enabled the Usage-Based Pricing option in my account settings, but the problem still persists.

From what I’ve seen on the forums, I’m not the only one experiencing this — it seems to have started for many users after one of the latest updates. If this is intentional behavior, it really undermines the value of the Pro plan.

Please look into this, because it’s starting to feel like we’re being forced into unnecessary upsells even though we’ve already paid for premium access.

Hi @rebezeli and welcome to the Cursor Forum

I understand this is frustrating, but the case you mentioned sounds opposite of what usually happens. Could you post a screenshot of the message? I do not know any message that would ask users to use higher tier models like Opus, instead of regular tier like Sonnet. Lower tier would make sense, as less heavy models wont get as fast into rate limits.

What may have happened:

  • You could have used up your rate limit and been asked to either upgrade plan or switch to smaller model (less resource usage) (not the opposite)
  • If there is an issue with usage based pricing, you should definitely report that to [email protected] official support for billing issues as we dont handle this is the forum.

In case you reached rate limits earlier than expected

  • Some users reach them faster than majority, which depends on how heavy usage you have. Also here, reach out to support via email to analyze your usage if there is an issue with switching to usage based pricing as this should not happen.

The new plan does allow most users way more usage per month than the old plan, but it really depends on the usage.
