[Regression 3.12.17 → 3.12.29] Agents Window theme control missing / Manage Themes also changes IDE theme

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Where does the bug appear?

Cursor IDE – Agents Window + Editor Window (themes)

Describe the Bug

After upgrading from Cursor 3.12.17 to 3.12.29:

  1. Agents Window suddenly appeared in a dark theme.
  2. Previously there was a place to adjust Agents Window appearance independently of the IDE editor theme. That independent control is no longer findable / seems gone or relocated.
  3. Using Agents Window → Settings → Appearance → Manage Themes → Cursor Light also changes the classic IDE / editor color theme at the same time.

Expected:

  • Agents Window can be set to light independently
  • IDE/editor Color Theme remains unchanged

Actual:

  • Independent Agents-only theme control is missing or hard to find after 3.12.29
  • Manage Themes appears to couple Agents Window appearance with IDE theme

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Upgrade Cursor from 3.12.17 to 3.12.29
  2. Open Agents Window → observe dark theme
  3. Agents Window → Settings → Appearance → Manage Themes → select Cursor Light
  4. Switch back to Editor Window / Open IDE
  5. Observe that the IDE Color Theme also changed to light

Operating System

Windows 10/11 (win32 10.0.26200)

Version Information

Previous working: 3.12.17
Current broken: 3.12.29

Does this stop you from using Cursor?

No – Cursor works, but theme UX regressed.

Additional notes

Official docs/forum previously suggested Agents Window has its own theme engine and Manage Themes should not sync with workbench.colorTheme. On 3.12.29 this appears coupled, and the earlier independent Agents appearance entry is no longer discoverable.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Thanks for the detailed report, and sorry for the confusion. In 3.12.29, the Agents Window theme syncs with the IDE theme, which is why selecting Cursor Light also changes the editor. The previous independent theme control is not currently available in public builds.

We are exploring a “Sync Theme with IDE” option that may appear in a future version and would restore independent themes, but we cannot confirm its availability or timing yet. For now, there is no public setting to keep the Agents Window and IDE themes separate.

I would also really appreciate this being fixed. I use both windows at the same time, for very different purposes. It helps me to have a dark theme in the IDE while keeping the Agent window light, but I can’t do that.

Thanks Darcie!

Where things stand today: as of 3.12.29 the Agents Window shares its theme with the IDE, so there isn’t a public setting yet to keep the two on separate themes. We’re looking at restoring independent control in a future version, but I can’t confirm whether or when it will land in a public build just yet. I’ll update this thread as soon as I have something concrete to share.
