Rewinding / truncating chat

Feature request for product/service

Cursor IDE

Describe the request

It would be nice to be able to go back to a message in the chat and wipe out everything from that message down, effectively rewinding the context to right before that message. Currently this can only be done by directly editing the preceding message, which triggers a “Revert”.

Operating System (if it applies)

Linux

You can scroll to whichever message you want and fork the chat. This will create a new chat with all previous messages up until that point. It is the icon next to the copy button

Hey @Ilker_Capoglu, thanks for the suggestion!

You can get most of the way there today. Click the earlier message to open it for editing (you can leave the text as it is or change it) and press Enter. Cursor will ask whether to revert files too. Choose Keep Files (Shift+Enter) and the conversation rewinds to that point without touching your code. Everything after that message is dropped and the agent continues from there.

If you want to keep the original thread intact, use Fork from the agent menu first and rewind on the copy as @Virginia0511 mentioned!
