I am absolutely furious that Cursor displayed a promotional popup for Grok 4.6 directly over my source code.
This is not a harmless announcement. It is not a release-note badge, an item in a notification center, or an optional model-discovery page. It is an advertisement that physically obscures the editor while I am programming. That is an astonishingly hostile product decision.
The editor is the one part of an IDE that must never become advertising space. It is where users concentrate, reason about difficult problems, and make precise changes to important systems. Interrupting that work to promote a commercial partnership or a newly available model demonstrates profound contempt for the user’s attention.
And no, “we only show these once a month” is not an acceptable defense. The acceptable frequency for promotional popups over source code is never. Once per month is still twelve deliberate interruptions per year that have no legitimate reason to exist.
Do not dismiss this as generic dislike of notifications. I am objecting specifically to promotional material appearing unsolicited over the code editor. A changelog, model catalog, notification panel, or unobtrusive status indicator already provides ample room to announce new products without hijacking the workspace.
Cursor needs to:
Stop displaying promotional popups over the editor.
Add a permanent “never show promotional content” setting.
Respect that setting across updates, devices, and newly introduced promotion formats.
Keep model announcements inside user-invoked discovery surfaces.
Explain why paying users were treated as captive advertising inventory in the first place.
Please do not sanitize this into “a user would prefer fewer notifications.” That would completely misrepresent the issue. I am enraged because Cursor crossed a boundary that an IDE vendor should understand instinctively: do not put advertisements on top of people’s code.
I should not need an ad blocker for my development environment. Remove this garbage and commit to never doing it again.
Have you considered that Grok 4.6 is a product by this company (not an unrelated hot dog brand) and perhaps users should be informed when a new model is released?
Have you considered that the IDE window is sacred and that anyone even considering using it as a marketing surface has a deep, fundamental lack of understanding of how software engineers actually work?
I’ve been a software engineer since the days of Vax and VMS and I don’t see the IDE as ‘sacred’. I’m quite sure I know how us software engineers work though… Sorry but throwing a hissy fit over a justified product announcement in the product it relates to is not blasphemous.
I think something might be wrong with how the pop up is rolled out; I have been getting the Grok pop up at least daily in the editor window for a few days now. It also doesn’t happen on startup but randomly during coding and pulls focus away from the editor, hence interrupting typing. Given that rollout I understand OP’s fury.

Right now there isn’t a separate setting to fully disable in-app announcements. I’ll share your point that the editor should stay free of promos with the team that decides how and where these messages show up. This is real feedback, and it’s been heard.
@SimonSchwaiger, on your case specifically: a popup that shows up daily and randomly while you’re typing isn’t expected behavior. To help us look into it, can you share:
your Cursor version Help > About and your OS
whether it shows up again after you close it, or if it’s different announcements each time
That’ll help us understand what’s happening on your side.
please add an option to disable that. i don’t want a popup when i have to edit something. my train of thought is gone when that happens. if marketing, or however came up with this horrible idea, wont budge then fine, just tell me so i can cancel my sub.
