Terminals won't appear, even after `App.../Cursor` wipe and reinstall

No terminals appear.

How can I fix the issue? Even rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/Cursor + reinstall doesn’t work.

Steps to Reproduce

I’m in a workspace with two directories, and two terminals open in the first directory. Terminals were positioned side-by-side at the bottom.

I was scrolling up in left-terminal while new messages were appearing. Then the scrolling got faster and faster until a tiny movement went up/down more than a screen. The scrolling increments seemed to get larger and larger until the terminal hung indefinitely. I then exited and restarted cursor. Ever since, terminals no longer appear.

I’ve tried:

panel > Terminal: Kill all terminals
panel > Open New External Terminal
panel > Create New Terminal in Editor Area
panel > Terminal: Create New Terminal > first open directory
restarting with cursor --disable-extensions
rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/Cursor followed by reinstalling cursor

When creating a new terminal, the terminal tab gets focused, but nothing appears there. Here is the output > Window log after panel > Terminal: Create New Terminal:

Hey, thanks for the detailed report and the log, it really narrowed things down.

All the errors in the log point to one thing: a terminal setting with a value Cursor can’t use. Most likely it’s a key named "terminal" or "terminal.integrated", set to true, false, null, a string, or a list, instead of specific terminal.integrated.xxx settings. Settings stored in your workspace file or in .vscode/settings.json inside a folder are not affected by deleting Application Support and reinstalling, which explains why the wipe didn’t help.

Can you go through these steps and tell me what you get?

File → New Window.
In the new window, open a folder that is NOT part of your two-folder workspace, any small folder is fine.
Terminal → New Terminal. Does the terminal show up there? Keep the answer in mind, then close that window.
Go back to your two-folder workspace, open the .code-workspace file itself File → Open File and look inside the "settings" block for any keys starting with terminal. Delete the key if it is exactly "terminal" or "terminal.integrated", then save the file.
In each of the two folders, open .vscode/settings.json if it exists, and check the same thing.
Cmd+Shift+P → Preferences: Open User Settings (JSON) and check the same thing there.
Restart Cursor and try Terminal → New Terminal.

If the terminal shows up after step 7, you’re all set. If it still doesn’t, paste the "settings" block from your .code-workspace file here remove anything private, and also check Output → Window for lines containing Conflict in settings file and paste those too.

One more question: was anything edited by you, a script, or an agent in your settings or workspace file around the time the scrolling started going crazy? That’ll help figure out where this value came from.

Thanks for the detailed troubleshooting steps Dean.

Knowing it was likely a settings problem, I first took a look at user settings json (I saved a copy before reinstalling). What I didn’t realize is that, when exploring available terminal settings by seeing auto-completed keys previously, I accidentally left the line "terminal": "".

Deleting that as you mentioned in #4 fixed the problem. Thank you!
