The cursor position has disappeared when I boot up my computer normally

After I shut down my computer normally and restart it, I find that Cursor fails to launch. This has occurred multiple times. My suspicion is that it might be due to an update that happened after shutdown?

It doesn’t open from the file location either. The only way to fix it is to uninstall and download it again.

Hey, thanks for the report. From the screenshot with the Windows dialog Cursor.exe has been changed or moved, this is a known Windows auto-updater issue. The update starts while the PC is shutting down, but the install step doesn’t finish before the reboot. As a result, Cursor.exe stays in the staging folder and the shortcut points to nothing, which is why it won’t launch and only reinstalling seems to help. Your guess about an update during shutdown is correct.

How to fix it now:

  • Download the latest installer from Cursor · Download and install it over the existing folder. Your settings and data won’t be lost.
  • If SmartScreen or a security warning shows up, click More info then Run anyway. This is expected for the official signed build.

To prevent it happening again:

  • Add the install folder %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\cursor to your antivirus or Windows Defender exclusions. AV file locking is a common cause.
  • Fully close Cursor before shutting down your PC, and don’t let it update during shutdown.

We’re aware of the bug and tracking it. I can’t share an exact fix timeline yet. Let me know if reinstalling didn’t help.
