Token Counter Missing from Chat Panel (Possibly Removed or Bugged?)

Has the token counter disappeared for everyone, or just for me?

That small, persistent indicator showing % of context tokens used was a key part of my workflow. It helped me gauge how much room I had left in the chat context before hitting the limit. Now, it seems to be gone entirely.

What I’m Seeing

  • The token counter that used to appear in the chat panel no longer shows up.

  • The faint circle at the bottom still flashes briefly while a prompt is running, but it disappears once the model starts responding.

  • That’s exactly when I need it most — when the chat is idle and I’m deciding whether to keep working in the same thread or start a new one.

  • At this point, even that faint circle no longer appears at all.

Questions

  • Was this change intentional or is it a bug?

  • Is there a configuration setting to re-enable the counter?

  • Has anyone else noticed this issue recently?

Why It Matters

Being able to see token usage in real time is crucial for managing longer conversations and avoiding context overflow. Losing that visibility makes it harder to plan prompts efficiently.

If anyone from the team (or other users) can confirm whether this was an intentional removal or a regression, I’d really appreciate the clarification.

Ok I discovered the issue. I run my Cursor in a smallish window. When the chat panel is narrow (which is my default) the token counter is the left-most icon under the chat input panel. Which means it is the first to be cut off when the panel is narrow. So no need to fix this. I’ll just widen my panel. Thanks

Stop hold the presses. The token counter does display …but does not persist after the response is completed.

This is the most relevant use of this feature (it does us no good to know how much tokens context is left DURING an agent run. We can’t fix it…). It’s ONLY relevant use is after the agent has completed ..when we need to decide on whether to move context or not.
