Cursor suggests actions too often, and it can be annoying.
Sometimes I only want Cursor to read information. Then I want to fork the conversation and use the same information for different tasks.
But when Cursor suggests an action, it interrupts this process. It can also stop me from forking from the previous message.
Please make these action suggestions less frequent, or add an option to turn them off.
Hi @Z_W Thank you for the forum post. There isn’t currently an option to turn them off but we are aware of the ask.
Two things that should help in the meantime: switching the chat to Ask mode keeps the session read-only (edit tools aren’t available there), so the agent stays in gathering mode instead of moving toward doing something. You can also add a rule in .cursor/rules/ or AGENTS.md to keep it from volunteering next steps:
Do not suggest or propose next actions, and do not ask me to pick between options.
Gather the information I asked for, report what you found, and stop.
While there isn’t a setting to switch the suggestions off outright today, you can nudge the agent’s behavior to interrupt you less frequently.
