Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

Hey @aurafriday, thanks for the report, and sorry for the scare.

Your chats are stored locally on your PC, and updating Cursor doesn’t delete them. After an update, Cursor sometimes reopens in a different window or folder, and the chat history list only shows chats for the window and folder you have open. That makes it look like everything is gone. Please don’t uninstall, reinstall, or clear any Cursor data while we sort this out. If you can, copy the folder %APPDATA%\Cursor somewhere safe first as a backup.

Could you try these steps?

  1. If Cursor opened in the Agents Window (a chat list grouped by project, with no file editor), go to File > Open IDE to get back to the editor.
  2. In the editor, go to File > Open Recent and pick the exact project folder you were working in before the update.
  3. Open the chat panel in that window and check the chat history list.
  4. Go to Cursor Settings > General > Startup > Window Restoration and set it to “Last Used Windows” so your windows and tabs come back after restarts.

If your chats still aren’t there, please reply with:

  • The size of %APPDATA%\Cursor\User\globalStorage\state.vscdb
  • Which Cursor version you were on before the upgrade
  • Whether you have more than one copy of Cursor installed on this PC (for example, an older version kept alongside the new one, a portable copy, or Cursor started with a custom data folder)
