Urgent: Lost all chat history 2.2.9

despite several claims from cursor people that the problem will be solved “tomorrow” four days ago, there has not been any announcement that i can find stating that the problem has been solved. given what appear to be a less-than-rigorous release process, i would like some confirmation that the bug has, in fact, been identified and fixed. specific yes/no question for cursor: has the problem been both identified and fixed? and second specific question: if so, what release contains the tested and verified fix?

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

After updating to the latest versions, all old chats do not work and never load.
Tried to open any shows, Load chat, but it never finished. Same time, after that can’t close the chat from the X button, but should restart the Cursor.
If till the chat show Load chat, I click on the clock to - Show chat History, then on the bottom left I see a red notification [composer] No composer data handle found.
Support of the Cursor stoped to reply after I contacted them and explained all the issues I had, and just pointed me to this forum.
This is not good from the support side, I think.
They should provide a fix for these problems as they started immediately after the update to the latest version, and everything worked perfectly before the update.
Any solutions of my issues?

Steps to Reproduce

Open Cursor and click on the any old chat/s

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Older chats from before the update to version 2.2.20 are unavailable.

When clicking a chat title on the chat history panel, nothing happens (chats created after the update are available and shown on the current chat panel).

In the Cursor devtools, I can see the following error logged when clicking an older chat title:

“No composer data handle found [handleDeselectingComposer]”

Steps to Reproduce

On the chat history panel, click a title of any of the older chats created before migrating to version 2.2.20.

Expected Behavior

When clicking a chat title, its content should be shown on the current chat panel.

This bug just bit me too. What good is state.vscdb.backup if it’s overwritten every quit? If you had at least kept a few backups we’d stand a chance of being able to recover things. But at this point by the time you find out you’ve already restarted and quit at least once and it’s gone.

It’s no composer error

switch to kilo code. ive just made the switch. took me five minutes.

Can we at least know where to find AI generated responses? For me state.db seem to be storing only the input prompts

@andrewh This just happened to me as well after upgrading to 2.2.20. Did I miss the context behind this being marked “solved”?

these bozos are continuing to push app updates without fixing the issue and without warning that the updates contain a known catastrophic un-recoverable data loss bug. you really have to step back and wonder what sort of amateur management they have going on in there

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

this morning I took the update to 2.2.36 and I’ve spent all day trying to recover my 15 current/historical chats that I was actively using up until the update. all my 15 directories are out there with state.vscdb files and .backup files so why won’t cursor open them… i can open the files with SQLite, no problem. Is this a known bug?

Steps to Reproduce

open Cursor, click on any of my chats in chat history and the spinner spins and spins and never opens the chat. I can start a new chat, but that doesn’t help.

Expected Behavior

click on a chat in chat history and it should open.

Fixed it by doing a forceful update (removing the install, reinstalling it and doing this):

solved, solution:

rm -rf ~/.config/Cursor

rm -rf ~/.cache/Cursor

rm -rf ~/.local/share/Cursor

i can confirm the same issue

Just happened to me as well after closing Cursor and restarting. This is a significant data issue.

Cursor Chat Storage Architecture

Location

C:\Users\Keith\AppData\Roaming\Cursor\User\

├── globalStorage\

│ └── state.vscdb ← Global state + some bubble data

└── workspaceStorage\

**└── <workspace-hash>\\**

    **└── state.vscdb ← Per-workspace chat data**

Inside state.vscdb (SQLite database)

Table What It Stores
ItemTable Key-value pairs including composer.composerData (chat metadata: IDs, titles, timestamps, which chat is selected)
cursorDiskKV The actual chat messages stored as bubbleId:: → JSON with full message content

The Two Key Pieces

  1. composer.composerData (in ItemTable)
  • List of all your chats (composers)

  • Each chat’s ID, creation date, archived status

  • Which chat is currently selected

  • This is your “chat list”

  1. cursorDiskKV
  • Keys like: bubbleId:2e7fee00-0e2b-4df7-8b62-0070d7413705:f66555d9-…

  • Values: JSON with the actual message text, code blocks, tool results, etc.

  • This is where the actual conversation content lives

Your Problem

In your case:

  • :white_check_mark: composer.composerData has 239 chats (metadata intact)

  • :cross_mark: cursorDiskKV has 0 entries (all message content gone)

This is why you see the chat list but get “Loading Chat” - Cursor knows the chats exist but can’t find the message data to display.

This just happened to me as well. All chat history gone.

It seems that the entire database that holds all of this stuff was wiped.

This happened after I installed SpecStory and Cursor Chat Transfer extensions because I wanted to start documenting & saving all of my chat history with all AI inside of Cursor (and outside). I had 2 git worktree cursor windows open, each one being seperate of course, and after restarting cursor because I changed a ES7 extension setting, it made me log back into cursor, log back into github, and all chat history is gone.

Hey folks thanks for your patience with this. We’ve released significant improvements in Cursor 2.3 to address this, so we recommend updating to the latest version when you can.

Please continue to let us know if this occurs after updating to a version beyond 2.3. Thanks!

Try Doctor in Cursor Mover: Copy the workspace without losing the chats

What improvements did you add to address this. It just happened to me yesterday, and I am on 2.3?

Does anyone know what caused my database to be wiped after a restart? I was able to recover it using R-Studio, fortunately.
