Why doesn’t JetBrains integration offer auto cost?

I only saw cursor smart

Hey there!
“Cursor smart” is actually the new Auto. We launched Cursor Router on July 22 and it’s on by default for Teams, so selecting Auto now routes each request to the most effective model for the task.

Auto has three Optimize For modes:

  • Cost - the previous Auto routing, with bundled Auto pricing (this is the “auto cost” you’re after)
  • Balance - optimizes for intelligence, speed, and cost
  • Intelligence - routes to the most capable models

The catch: the JetBrains integration connects through ACP, which only exposes the default Auto routing right now - the Optimize For selector (including Cost) isn’t available inside JetBrains yet. It’s a real limitation on that surface, not something you’re missing.

Two ways to get the cost-optimized behavior in the meantime:

  1. Use the Cursor desktop app for those sessions: open the model picker, select Auto, then set Optimize For → Cost.
  2. In JetBrains, pick a specific model in the model picker instead of the routed Auto (JetBrains supports model selection).

One heads-up: Balance and Intelligence use your usage limits faster than Cost, so if cost is the priority, the desktop Cost mode or a specific lighter model is the way to go for now. I’ll make sure the team sees the request to bring Optimize For to JetBrains.
