### Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

### Describe the Bug

The in-app updater cannot install an update while the Google Windows App is running. The dialog is:

```auto
There was an error while Moving: "resources":
Access is denied. (os error 5)
Please verify there are no Cursor processes still executing.
```

Cancel leaves the previous install working. The update does not apply. The process holding the folder is not Cursor. LockHunter on `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\cursor\resources` shows:

- Process: `google.exe`
- Path: `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Google\latest\google.exe`
- Description: Google Windows App

This is the Google Windows app (version 1.0.22.0 installed), not Chrome. Quitting it releases the folder. Reproduced on two PCs. On this PC the failed runs are 20 Sep (twice) and 22 Sep 2026. On the other PC the same failure happened on 16, 18, 19, and 22 Sep 2026, also Inno Updater v0.16.0.

This is earlier than the cleanup failure in thread 172151. That dialog says `Deleting a directory: …\cursor_bak\resources` after the new version is already installed, and the handle there was `Code.exe`. Here the backup move of the live `resources` folder never finishes, so the updater reverts and the old version stays.

The journal rollback from thread 168867 does work: the install survives. The in-app updater still cannot finish while `google.exe` holds `resources` (specifically `\resources\app\bin`).

### Steps to Reproduce

1. Leave the Google Windows App running (`%LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Google\latest\google.exe`).
2. Start a Cursor in-app update and quit Cursor so the updater runs.
3. The updater moves the other install files into `_bak`, then retries `resources` → `_bak\resources`. After attempt 11 it fails and reverts.

Either of these lets the update finish:

- Quit the Google Windows App after the failure, then run the update again. It completes.
- Quit the Google Windows App while retries 1–9 are still in progress. The next move attempt succeeds and the installation continues immediately, without starting over.

### Expected Behavior

The updater moves `resources` and finishes the update while unrelated apps are running. If a handle blocks the move, the dialog names that process. It currently says to check for leftover Cursor processes, and no Cursor process is holding the folder.

### Additional Information

Failed run, `%TEMP%\cursor-inno-updater-1790108608.log`, 22 Sep 2026 (full file attached; excerpt):

```auto
Sep 22 20:23:34.377 INFO Inno Updater v0.16.0
Sep 22 20:23:34.388 INFO do_update: "C:\\Users\\Micha\\AppData\\Local\\Programs\\cursor\\Cursor.exe", _
```

Before `resources` fails, `Cursor.exe`, the DLLs, and `locales` are already in `_bak`. Recovery moves them back. The log then ends with a second `Access is denied. (os error 5)` while cleaning up `_bak`.

A later run the same evening (`cursor-inno-updater-1790109442.log`), with the Google app not holding the folder, goes `BackingUp` → `BackedUp` → `Flipping` → `Committing` and ends with `Update was successful!`.

Screenshot attached: LockHunter, folder `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\cursor\resources` locked by `google.exe`.

Hey @logicnumber, thanks for the detailed report! This is an issue we’re already tracking (the updater can’t move the install folder while another app holds it open), and I’ve added your report to it, including the Google Windows App finding and the fact that the error message points at Cursor processes when it isn’t one.

In the meantime, you don’t need to cancel and start over. When the “There was an error while Moving” dialog appears:

1. Quit the Google Windows App (right-click its icon in the system tray, then Quit, or end google.exe in Task Manager).
2. Click Retry (not Cancel) in the Cursor dialog.
3. The update should continue and finish.

Quitting the Google app before you click “Restart to Update” avoids the dialog entirely.

Same problem. Updater will not update. I do not have the Google Windows app running. Something else is locking the “resources” folder but the installer doesn’t make it obvious at all. When is this going to be fixed?

Hey @Kevin_Lambert, thanks for the note. We’re still working on this, and I don’t have a timeline yet. I’ll post here when there’s an update.

You can always download the installer from [Cursor · Download](https://cursor.com/download) and run it - that will still work! Understand the pain point here tho and we are working on a fix.

Hey @logicnumber, following up on this one. Recent versions include a couple of updater improvements: a failed update now rolls back so your current install keeps working (which you’d already seen), and Cursor cleans up more of its own background processes so they’re less likely to hold the install folder. When a separate app like the Google Windows App has the folder open, it still needs to be closed for the update to finish, so quitting it first (or quitting it and clicking Retry) is still the way to go.

@Kevin_Lambert @Krishnam_Datla, please update to the latest version (the installer at [Cursor · Download](https://cursor.com/download) works if the in-app update won’t finish) and see whether your next update goes through. If it still fails, open Resource Monitor while the error is showing (search “resmon” in the Start menu, go to the CPU tab, and search Associated Handles for cursor\resources), then let us know which process shows up. If it’s antivirus or endpoint security software, an exclusion for the Cursor install folder usually resolves it ([Endpoint Security Configuration | Cursor Docs](https://cursor.com/docs/enterprise/endpoint-security)), and if it’s a Cursor process, that’s something we definitely want to hear about.

Just wanted to let you know that I’ve had this issue updating with all of the last few releases of Cursor. I have had to do the workaround where I download the latest installer and re-install Cursor manually.

In this case, this is what I see in resmon when Cursor is trying to auto-update me from v3.26.13 to v3.26.16:
