Your message is too long... please give us a USEFUL message!

Feature request for product/service

Cursor IDE

Describe the request

This message is annoyingly unhelpful:-
" Your message is too long. Please try again with a shorter message and fewer/smaller attached items. "
It needs to say how long it was, what the max is that we can supply, and a recommendation for how much “smaller/fewer” before we re-try!
I also suspect this is a model-related/dependant thing, so suggesting which other model would work if we switched would be even more useful.

Operating System (if it applies)

Windows 10/11

FYI - my message was 128k tokens, using claude - so you probably have a bug? Claude should be able to take 200k, right?

Also - I get the same message when using “auto” mode - which is definitely a bug: if I’ve let you pick the model, you need to pick one which can take my input - not give me an error because you picked the wrong one!

If the amount of text is too long then you do need to shorten the text, it happens on other models as well. If you need a work around, create a temp directory and tell cursor to check the temp folder and read the file then proceed from there and it will read it, no matter if its 20k 200k or 2mb.

Thanks - but you’re addressing something that is not related to my request.

The problem here is that the ERROR MESSAGE is useless, in multiple different ways, and that the “Auto” routing model is also not working properly.

We need to be told the numbers, not a uselessly vague “too long” with no hints about what the model we’re using can take, nor what we provided! (Does “shorten” mean remove 1 sentence, or halve the entire input, etc?).

Also, 128k should have fit into a 200k model, and the Auto feature should have picked a model which can take my input.

And finally, while not the topic of my request, you can’t “tell cursor…” to read something big and expect it consumed the whole thing - it never will, and you will always lose something - which was the entire point of my trying to force it to load the whole 128k in the 1st place.
