A new tab for every new chat!? REALLY?

Describe the Bug

Every new chat adds a new tabbed chat. This means that I have to manually delete old chats otherwise they clog up the UI. I might make 50 new chats in a day… This is a major headache

Steps to Reproduce

Click the plus button to add a new chat

Expected Behavior

New chat replaces the old chat.

Additional Information

Now I have to hold ALT to replace the tab. Why make extra work for your users? New features should be optional. Do you know about something called muscle memory? I’ve been using cursor from the early days and now I have to relearn my own workflow just to do the basics, and now it takes an extra click or an extra key press.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, by default, the plus button opens a new tab. If you want to open a new chat in the same tab, hold the Alt key. You can also use the shortcut Cmd/Ctrl + N.

That’s swapped from the previous behaviour, right?

Yeah, the old behavior used to replace the chat by default, and would only create a new tab when holding ALT. I personally like the new behavior better because it’s more consistent with the tab behavior in web browsers, file explorer, etc.. Adding a new tab by default makes it harder for me to lose chats by accident.

Can you update this so by default it uses the same tab and the modifier creates a new one? The new tabs are wholly useless for most things as the prior conversations are available elsewhere, and if you’re not using the app on a high-resolution monitor there just isn’t enough space horizontally in that sidebar.

I’d also be fine if closing the last tab didn’t entirely close the chat sidebar, so that I can close an existing tab before starting the new chat so I don’t have to try to find the tiny close box in the cramped tab control.

New behavior is better. Cmd + T means new tab in web browser, glad cursor finally matches that.

It’s annoying that this changed silently but I like the new behavior better. It’s more like browser tabs.
