Cursor desktop app offers update to unavailable vesion

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Cursor shows the Update button, hovering over it reveals that 3.22.7 is available for download. I click it, the app closes, after reopening it’s still on 3.21.18 and the Update button shows again.

Steps to Reproduce

  • Install the Linux build, specifically AppImage.
  • Open the app
  • Wait 30 seconds or so for the update check to execute.

Expected Behavior

The Update button should only show if a new version is actually available for download.

Additional Information

Cursor itself told me that the cause is that this is the update info URL:

https://api2.cursor.sh/updates/api/update/linux-x64/cursor/3.21.18/3a8ee37845d8c23bb64e73a47ff971a2bb92089e8e55001f021e7764b2c97abb/stable

I can’t verify if that’s what Cursor actually uses, but the URL looks legit, works, and indeed - it points to the 3.22.7 version, which is not yet available on the main download site (Cursor · Download).

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the detailed report, and for digging up the update URL. That really helped.

The update you’re seeing is real. 3.22.7 is rolling out gradually, so it’s not on the download page yet. The behavior isn’t caused by anything in your setup. The in-app updater for AppImage is currently rejecting this build and restoring the previous file, so Cursor goes back to 3.21.18 and the Update button shows up again. This is a known issue we’re tracking, and I’ve passed your report to the team.

For now, there are two options:

  1. Just ignore the Update button. Once 3.22.7 reaches the download page, the in-app update should work normally.
  2. Or update manually. Fully close Cursor, download the new AppImage directly, make it executable (chmod +x), and replace your current file. It’s best to back up the old one first.

Your settings and chat history won’t be affected in either case. If you want to confirm the cause, run your current AppImage from the terminal and click Update. In the output, you’ll see AppImage no longer comes with signature / Restoring original file.

Let me know if any of this doesn’t work.
