Cursor freezes every 10 seconds for 3 seconds or so

I did the following and the issue completely got removed.

Put in a different NVME ssd,
Clean installed Windows 10 (it was Windows 11)

And all problems completely gone.

What I think was happening.
I think this is related to windows and User Appdata which leads to 100% disk usage.

Simply put, I think this is a microsoft ■■■■ up. Unnoticable in normal usage, but as soon as some software uses AppData a lot, like Cursor, it starts to break windows (not cursor) down.

It has to be related to microsoft’s stupid telemetry as the new version I installed (Tiny10) debloats all microsoft’s doings.
And now my disk usage is either 1% or 2% while using Cursor.

I uninstalled and reinstalled cursor so many times, and after a while, my desktop stopped responding, very weird, and I couldn’t even open folders in desktop, while the rest of the pc was totally usable. I could even run games and render things in blender…so yeah. And let’s not go to the “could it be a malware/virus” route. I keep my system clean and tight.

I will continue to report back, as this could be hardware, but the fact that it worked fine in 0.47.9 makes me think otherwise…it just feels like software.

So, with Cursor’s stream of data read and write combined with window’s attempt to collect data, something must have gone wrong. I did have all telemetry disabled in windows before, but we know that doesn’t disable all.

Or it could be some weird syncing behavior that is bugged in the OS.
Either way, if you want to fix this.

  1. Try a debloated windows
    or
  2. Try a different NVME.

as always, try it at your own risk.

I consider this to be not Cursor’s fault, but do feel like this is an issue that the Cursor team should be aware of, as this is a widespread issue. Since I have swapped my NVME, I still have my windows 11 as it is intact, so if the team needs me to debug or test something, I am open to helping.

I have the same problem. here you go:

Same as OP i have had no problems until some weeks ago. since the very latest update I have the same issues. I see that they are very regular, like a scheduled task every

Is there at least a workaround without reinstalling windows or swapping drives???

Similar problem on Ubuntu: has been freezing last few weeks randomly for a few seconds every 10 seconds or so. I have 128gb of RAM, Ryzen 3900x CPU and Samsung 990 Pro NVME.

I’ve run sudo iotop- and this is what I observed:

Switching tabs in Cursor (clicking another file) → freezes Cursor for a few seconds. Looking at the terminal → I can see cursor starts writing to disk at the same time.

Ram, Swap size, CPU usage stay mostly unaffected.

Disk write coincides with freezes.

______
“cursor.general.enableShadowWorkspace”: → setting this to false seems to make it better (still trying to observe if it’s just coincidental).

Also I’ve been running 5 cursor windows at the same time. I’m now checking if running just one will prevent freezing (but I’d prefer running multiple ones for multitasking). Maybe this will
help reproduce it.

__________
Still freezing after disabling enableShadowWorkspace and running just one Cursor window.

_____
The same problem isn’t happening in VSCode (I’m running it alongside).

So far I am still doing good. I think the debloated windows really did something.
As for what else is there that we can do…then there isn’t much I can offer.

Same issue here , That Shift option keep running and i have to stop to be able to start again ,

this only less than 24 hours since donwload it

This problem bothers me a lot too. In the latest versions it’s gotten better, but only somewhat better, and I’m not interested in deleting old chats at all.
I hope it will be fixed soon from what I’ve checked, it happens due to some indexing process running in the background.
Does it also, for you, when it freezes, show as if it’s performing some activity on the files in File Explorer?
