Cursor taking very long time to launch when the project has a lot of AI chats

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

When I launch a cursor with a workspace that has many chats it starts the cursor, but after few seconds it hangs and shows a windows window “The window is not responding” (see screenshot #1). Depending on the chat count it takes some time for it to finally fully launch. I tried once deleting all the chats, and it worked, but I get many many of chats fast and its not nice UX to go into the files, search for that project somehow via uuid and remove them all.

See the screenshot #2, it shows how it looks while it loads. After some time it’s screenshot #3.

it does the same when launching via cursor --disable-extensions.

Steps to Reproduce

Get on windows 11, create many many of chats in a workspace. close and open cursor on it again.

Expected Behavior

It should load normally, no matter of chat count, that’s just rendering the tabs.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the detailed report and screenshots.

When a workspace opens, Cursor loads the saved chats for that workspace and reopens all chat tabs that were open when you last closed it. Until that finishes, the window stays busy. So the more chats and open tabs there are, the longer “The window is not responding” can last. Extensions don’t affect this, so the result with --disable-extensions is expected. I’ve passed this on to the team.

To speed up startup without deleting files manually, there are 2 ways:

  1. Before quitting, close extra chat tabs: right-click the tab you want to keep, then choose Close Others.
  2. You can delete old chats directly in Cursor: Ctrl+Shift+P > Developer: Delete Old Chats…, then choose the age threshold in days. Pinned chats will stay.

Could you also check one more thing? This will help us understand what’s slowing it down in your case:

  1. Open this workspace and wait until it fully loads.
  2. Leave only one chat tab open using Close Others.
  3. Fully close Cursor via File > Exit.
  4. Open Cursor again on the same workspace.

Did the freeze go away, get shorter, or stay the same? Also, please let me know about how many chats are in this workspace and how many chat tabs were open when the window was freezing.
