Cursor won't stop sometimes

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Cursor, at least with Opus 4.5, will sometimes keep going ■■■■■■■ up files and won’t stop no matter how many times I slam the stop button or tell it to stop, it will sit there and then wake back up and start wrecking havoc. I am sure this is great for your token counts and billing, but its driving me nuts.

Steps to Reproduce

Happens very frequently but no exact repro. I am sure you have seen this before given it happens many times a day for me.

Expected Behavior

Stop when I click stop, immediately, and without question. This is something that shouldn’t be up to the LLM, when I hit that button it should simply halt the model. This should work equally for every single model guys!

For AI issues: which model did you use?

Opus 4.5

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Sometimes - I can sometimes use Cursor

Hey, thanks for the report.

This is a known issue, and the team is working on a fix. A similar bug was reported recently: Agent ignoring stop button and calls to stop in the chat

Workarounds for now:

  • Close the terminal manually (trash icon in the terminal panel)
  • Restart Cursor if the agent stops responding completely
  • As a last resort, close the chat tab and start a new one

To help the team fix this faster, could you share:

  • The Request ID next time this happens (top-right chat menu > Copy Request ID)
  • A short video or a detailed description of what the agent was doing when it refused to stop
  • Whether you were using Planning mode or the regular agent

Let me know if the workarounds help.
