Custom mode is great but not reliable

Hello Cursor team, and thank you for this amazing product. I really appreciate the efforts and challenge making all the pieces work flawlessly together. And I am using the beta-releases, so I expect things to now always work.

To make using Claude 3.7 + inference-time reasoning more stable, I decided to use the new custom mode feature. Which I think will be a game changer for many reasons.

BUT…

My Design mode turns off ALL the edit tools. So, just to make sure, I prompted my cursor agent to try really really hard to remember how to use its editing tools (I did not provide the recipe) to create and hello_design_mode.md file. Initially, he responded that he could not, but I saw in his thinking that he did not really tried. After some encouragements to really try, he was able to create the file as requested.

So, is the custom mode builder UI only just assembling a prompt based on the selected mode options, are is the mode actually controlling access to tools?

If I may propose another game changer feature for those of us how are using Cursor to build coding agents with memories and other crazy capabilities, auto-pinning project rules based on the selected mode would open-up so many possibilities.

Thank you for changing my world, after 45 years of coding.

Pinned rules would be a game changer for certain. I also noticed how my custom mode, cant identify itself as a custom mode. I name my mode “Architect” and when I asked “Please introduce yourself”, It just spat out what was in the User rules and not the custom. This makes me think that Cursor User rules, might override Custom rules or they may be conflicting? Idk

There is an option under advanced options to enter a custom instruction where you can ask it to introduce itself as Architect
