Filter file names and sort order

I have two very basic questions :

  1. how can I filter files, e.g. by extension type
  2. how can I sort files, e.g. by date modified

The Search tab will look for a filter regex in files. What I want is just to not see anything but what I’m filtering. Same for sorting : it looks like it isn’t possible. Am I missing something obvious ?
