Right now a bot can’t see its user’s Auto-review custom rules, so it can’t help manage them. It can’t spot overlapping rules, warn before the 20-rule cap, suggest merges, or explain which rule stopped one of its own actions. Today a new Ask first rule unexpectedly caught a routine’s write to a data file, and the bot could only guess which rule did it.
Request:
Read-only access for bots to the rule list: text, type (Allow, Ask first, Block) and count.
Editing stays with the user only.
A bonus would be naming the matching rule in each block message.
Today a bot can’t read your Auto-review custom rules. Your saved Allow rules reach it only when it decides whether a message can be sent without a draft card. Your Ask first rules, the rule count and the 20-rule limit never reach it. That is why it could only guess which rule stopped the routine.
You can often see the matching rule yourself, though. When one of your Ask first rules pauses an action, the approval card for that action should show “Paused by your Ask first rule” with the rule’s text, and an Edit rule button that opens it in Settings. If a card has no rule notice, the pause most likely came from Auto-review’s general safety check rather than one of your rules.
To spot overlaps or see how close you are to the limit, Settings > Auto-review > Custom Rules lists every rule with its behavior in one place.
Read-only access for bots, and naming the rule to the bot when an action is paused, aren’t available yet. This thread is the place to collect votes for them, next to your 20-rule limit request!
