To meet your needs, please change the orientation of the “Activity Bar” from horizontal to vertical.

I know this post is old, but myself and other members of my team just installed and imported all our settings from our existing VSCode apps, but this item was missed. A number of us were complaining about the toolbar location and I decided to come log a bug here, but found the solution. The question reamains as to why it didn’t pickup our existing setting.
echoing @guycnicolas 's comment. I’m not seeing that option anymore. I’m on mac with the latest build.
