Paying subscriber. For about two weeks, in-app updates on my MacBook Pro fail. Cursor downloads the update, quits as if installing, then ShipIt retries and aborts with “Too many attempts to install, aborting update,” then relaunches the old build. Workaround: uninstall and reinstall from cursor.com.
Steps to Reproduce
Accept an in-app update. App quits for install. ShipIt begins installation, resumes attempt 2/3, then aborts and relaunches the old version.
Expected Behavior
Update installs and Cursor relaunches on the new version.
Operating System
MacOS
Version Information
OS: macOS 27.0.1 (Build 26A434), Apple Silicon.
Cursor: 3.22.12 (/Applications/Cursor.app)
This is a known issue with in-app updates on macOS 27 that the team is tracking, and I’ve added your report to it. It usually happens when Cursor isn’t allowed to run in the background: macOS then stops the installer as soon as Cursor quits, which is why ShipIt retries and gives up.
Could you try these steps?
Quit Cursor completely (Cursor → Quit Cursor, or Cmd+Q).
Open System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions.
Under “Allow in the Background”, find Cursor (and any Cursor entry) and turn it on.
Open Cursor again, wait for the Update button, and click it.
Let me know whether Cursor was turned off in step 3, and if the update succeeds after turning it on!
Hi Colin, I followed your instructions, and the update worked as expected. Thanks for the heads-up as well; hopefully you and the team figure it out. All the best!
