Loading Chat Freezes

I encountered a strange bug. After duplicating a chat from a conversation, within about 10 exchanges or fewer, the chat completely froze while answering one of my questions. Now, when I reopen it, it keeps loading indefinitely. Even after closing and reopening Cursor, the issue persists.

I am having the exact same issue… and now I can’t reopen that project with cursor because the chat is always stuck.

Hey, this issue might be related to a large chat history in your project. Cursor isn’t the best place to store chats long-term. If you want to keep your history, you can export it using this extension:

To resolve the issue, try renaming your project or moving it to a different location on your disk. This will break the link to the chat history and should allow you to continue working.

@Armorine
Temporary Workaround:
When reopening the project, quickly locate the top-right corner of the frozen chat and close it. This will allow your project to function normally again without getting stuck. However, do not reopen that same chat, or it will freeze again.

@deanrie
Thanks! I’ll give it a try right now.

Since you mentioned this is only specific chats, it may be related to this issue:

The way Cursor renders terminal output is likely causing certain chats to crash the editor, not long history @deanrie

I’ve noticed that renaming does work, but that’s kind of a ridiculous “fix”… If working around it is that easy then surely it’s basically a bug that Cursor can/should fix.

Anyway… Is there a way to clear the problematic chat once you’ve managed to get Cursor up and running again? I’d like to revert my directory/project name, if possible.

There is maybe another “fix” for Mac users:

  1. Close Cursor
  2. Open ~/Library/Application Support/Cursor/User/
  3. Go to the History folder
  4. Sort files by date in the file explorer
  5. Delete the folders corresponding to the time when the crash happened
  6. Go to the workspaceStorage folder
  7. Do the same as for History
  8. Restart Cursor.
