macOS icon support for dark and light appearance

Feature request for product/service

Cursor IDE

Describe the request

Hi everyone,

Does the Cursor team have plans to support macOS adaptive icon theming — where the app icon automatically adjusts for light and dark mode?

macOS now supports tinting and dark/light variants for app icons in the Dock and elsewhere. It would be great if Cursor’s icon adapted to match the system appearance, especially for those of us who switch between modes or prefer a consistent Dock aesthetic.

Is this on the roadmap, or has it been considered?

Thanks!

Cursor IDE

Describe the request

On macOS, the Cursor Dock icon reads as fairly dark. On a light wallpaper or with the Dock set to a light appearance, it can look heavy or low-contrast compared to other apps that offer a light variant or adapt to Light/Dark Mode.

Request: Provide a way to use a light-background Dock icon (or ship two icon assets and switch with system Light/Dark Mode, similar to how some native apps handle template-style or dual icons).

Why it matters: Purely visual polish and consistency with the rest of the desktop—not a blocker for using the editor.

Possible approaches (for the team):

Settings entry: “Dock icon: Default / Light background”
Or: follow NSAppearance / system theme so the icon matches without a manual toggle

Operating System (if it applies)

MacOS

Hi @Gal_Jacobson Thanks for the feature request! That’s correct, we don’t currently have an adaptive icon, but it’s something we can consider. I’ve merged in a recent thread so we can have others weigh in on this as well.
