Open links by default in external browser

Feature request for product/service

Cursor IDE

Describe the request

Would be nice to have a setting where links open by default in an external browser. No right click necessary.

Hey, thanks for the feature request. You’re not the first user to ask for this, I’ve logged a request for a separate option along with the others.

There isn’t a single global setting to always open all links in an external browser yet, but a few things can help right now:

  • For localhost links: turn off Settings → Tools & MCP → “Show Localhost Links in Browser” so they open in your external browser instead of the built-in one.
  • For links in chat or markdown: hold Cmd or Ctrl while clicking to open in your system browser.
  • In the Chat panel, click the browser icon in the toolbar and pick your browser like Google Chrome. This also affects Cmd+Click in the terminal.

I’ve passed the request for a full default setting along. I can’t share an ETA yet, but I’ll reply in the thread if anything changes.

Thank you! Codex does this and it feels 100x better for UX.
