Request - spell check in chats!

Can we get basic spell/ grammar check for text user enters to the Chat pane?
To state the obvious… LLMs are sensitive to this - especially in high precision tasks:

  • poor spelling input seems to sanction low precision output.
  • correct spelling input elicits higher precision & more granular attention to detail
  • currently many of us are typing prompts in Word docs and then pasting them to Cursor chat pane.
  • spell check in chat pane would therefore make an enormous difference despite being a basic feature.

Please introduce. Thank you and keep up the wonderful work!

Spellcheck is essential for optimal prompt outcomes. The LLM does not respect incorrect spelling, despite what it tells you.

Just like GPS has made a lot of people “directionally-challenged”, ubiquitous spell-checkers have caused spelling to get sloppy.

In theory, spelling mistakes shouldn’t make a difference, but LLMs can be weird.

I don’t know how widespread it is, but I’ve read that some model engage in “sand-bagging” (tailoring the response to the perceived intelligence of the user.)

e.g. If they think you’re dumber due to spelling, you might get dumber results.

Either way it could help with sanity, and reduce the cognitive load of second-guessing words.

I brought spellcheck up to a Cursor dev on X and it seems they just mash the keyboard with no concern for spelling/coherence.

Grok said any response tailoring based on spelling/grammar would be subtle and instruction-turned models should override this.

Even if it makes 0 difference to the output I’d still prefer it as it takes mental load to try not to care about spelling in the one place without spellcheck. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
