Run Command often freezes

I waste so many of my requests due to the terminal constantly getting stuck in Agent mode, borderline unusable.

Regardless if the terminal is open, or closed, it nearly constantly gets stuck and once stuck once, its impossible to get it unstuck in that chat. So you have to submit a new request to paste in the results for every terminal window.

Any advice for Linux via SSH would be appreciated.

The command has completed in the terminal, it just never checks for some reason. Give us a button that says, re-read the terminal (that doesn’t cause a full new request to be sent) until ya’ll can work out why this logic is so broken.

this is still happening in 1.3.5 as well, the trigger seems to be an output in the terminal that has more than 150~ lines of output.

Thank you for the update, appreciate it!

Sorry that this is not yet fixed. We covered several cases in latest update but need more info under which circumstances this occurs, so we fix also your issue.

Could you provide following:

  • Does it happen when you connect to a remote Linux machine from Windows only? Or also without connecting to other machines, locally on Windows?
  • WSL or powershell?
  • Is there any error in Help > Toggle Developer Console > Console?
  • Could you post a Request ID with privacy disabled so we can look into the details? Cursor – Getting a Request ID

Confirm this is connect to remote Linux machine from Windos only, or Container running on the Linux machine.

I see these in my Developer Console:

Describe the Bug

Hi there, there’s a bug in git-bash that vscode users experience it manifests in cursor in two parts (1) the agent “miss-types” the first letter (due to malformed color command) and (2) as the foreground agent hanging, waiting for the shell command to complete that never will unless the user hits enter.

Since I’m a programmer myself, I’ve investigated this and I hope this report can shine light on this mysterious bug that hangs the foreground agents for a lot of windows users.

I would say this is the primary cause of problems for me right now, 10-30% of all terminal commands are failing this way. So most of the time a cursor foreground becomes stuck when I walk away and don’t provide manual intervention. It’s the #1 bug I’m hitting day to day.

THE PROBLEM:

VScode + git-bash => occasionally a malformed color command is being injected into the terminal.

The bug will manifest by the first character getting stripped off of the tool call. So for example: uv run python -m ci.compiler will be transformed into v run python -m ci.compiler (notice the missing u at the front of uv tool call). This results in the error message: v is not a program.

This does NOT happen for background agents working in the wsl workspace. Only on Windows with git-bash (as far as I can tell).

*Workarounds*: I update my cursorrules so that the AI will prepend the tool call with an extra space. This seems to work better than not.

However, this bug also then manifests in a different issue:

The closing color tag is also malformed!

This is the symptom:

The terminal of the foreground agent will appear hung, but then click on the most recent terminal thats current blocking the agent, so it has ui focus, then hit the enter key. A new line will be sent to the terminal and this will, as far as I can guess, allow the color mode of git-bash to be terminated thus completing the shell command, thus releasing control back to the agent. The agent will immediately resume operation.

My research produced the following links that goes into more detail about this issue:

Steps to Reproduce

You can replicate in vscode or cursor.

You need to set settings.json up so that it calls into the git-bash shell, like this:

{
    "terminal.integrated.defaultProfile.windows": "Git Bash",
    "terminal.integrated.shellIntegration.enabled": false,
    "terminal.integrated.profiles.windows": {
        "Command Prompt": {
            "path": "C:\\Windows\\System32\\cmd.exe"
        },
        "Git Bash": {  // <---- THIS !!!!!
            "path": "C:\\Program Files\\Git\\bin\\bash.exe",
            "args": ["--cd=."]
        }
    },
    "files.eol": "\n", // Unix
    "files.autoDetectEol": false, // Prevent VS Code from auto-detecting and changing EOL
    "files.insertFinalNewline": true, // Ensure files end with a newline
    "files.trimFinalNewlines": true, // Remove extra newlines at the end
    "editor.tabSize": 4,
    "editor.insertSpaces": true,
    "editor.detectIndentation": true,
    "editor.formatOnSave": false,
    // Debugger defaults - ensure C++ debugger is used for C++ files
    "debug.defaultDebuggerType": "cppdbg",
    "debug.toolBarLocation": "docked",
    "debug.console.fontSize": 14,
    "debug.console.lineHeight": 19,
    // Prevent Python debugger from interfering with C++ files
    "python.defaultInterpreterPath": "uv",
    "python.debugger": "debugpy",
}

Expected Behavior

The foreground agent doesn’t get stuck.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Sometimes - I can sometimes use Cursor

Describe the Bug

When working in Agent mode, the integrated terminal frequently becomes unresponsive. The prompt (PS line) gets “stuck,” and sometimes a small circle icon appears to the left of the prompt. Without manual intervention, neither Agent actions nor the terminal resume, causing the development flow to halt indefinitely.

Steps to Reproduce

Enable and use Agent mode in Cursor.

Start a process that generates terminal output (e.g., running tests, building, or invoking agent commands).

Wait for completion or the next prompt.

Observe that the terminal sometimes freezes, with or without a small circle icon to the left of the PS prompt.

Try using Cursor normally—notice that nothing resumes until manually intervened.

Expected Behavior

After a command or agent task completes, the terminal prompt should remain active and responsive. Agent processes and the terminal should proceed automatically, without the need for user intervention.

Additional Information

Manual resolution is possible by clicking into the terminal window and pressing Enter one or two times.

When a circle icon is present, it usually disappears after pressing Enter and may briefly reappear.

If no icon is present, one or two circles may appear quickly and vanish after intervention.

This happens repeatedly during Agent-driven programming, interrupting the workflow as frequent human intervention is required.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

2025-08-03 11_28_50-test-output.txt - JsonSchemaExtractor - Cursor

Hey there! I’m experience the same issue in the latest version.

I am also seeing this issue. I have version 1.35. Every terminal command just sits and spins until I hit return a couple of times

Yes this happens A LOT with the remote ssh to linux also. I’ve been asking them to add a button next to the skip button that allows us to tell the software that the terminal is done and to return the data to the agent. This really should have been there, and while it’s not fixing the bug itself it gives us a way to make it continue without interrupting it and wasting another request which in turn wastes money.

Describe the Bug

An agent hangs when executing/testing some python file. It runs it and just waits for hours, even though the console shows that the script has been running for a long time. Initially I thought it was thinking for a long time - but for more than an hour it just stands in one place and does not regress on anything, not even Shift+Backspace.

It lags on literally almost every request, and it constantly has to be restarted. This is annoying

Either a new query via ALT + Enter or restarting the cursor helps. I’ve used different AI agents: Auto, ChaGpt, Claude 4 sonnet. Also changed chats, but still can hang both in the old chat, and at the first request in a new chat.

Who has the same thing? How to fix it?

Steps to Reproduce

Give him a task and tell him to test it himself.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

hi @Rudy996 and welcome to Cursor Forum.

Thank you for your detailed bug report.

It seems like agent is using interactive commands which never end.

Could you add to User Rules the mention to see if this improves handling: Interactive terminal commands can not be used as they never exit.

Unfortunately, nothing has changed. It still keeps freezing for several hours after running a script

Thank you for the update. Do you mean AI is still running interactive commands in terminal?

He launches the Python script, the script does its job and finishes, but the AI agent keeps waiting for something until I manually stop it using ALT+ENTER (since it doesn’t react to SHIFT+BACKSPACE).

When it got stuck in this “waiting” state before (after running the script), I left it overnight as a test, and it kept hanging for 8 hours, still “running” the same script.

I see, we are tracking this issue currently and working on an update.

Is there any update on this? Is there an option to revert back to a previous version of cursor where this wasn’t an issue?

Describe the Bug

Chat does not detect that terminal command is completed. Sometimes it takes 30 seconds, sometimes its instant, sometimes it’s 2 minutes and sometimes it gets completely stuck no matter what i seem to do. You can(?) sometimes speed it up by clicking skip but that doesnt always work.+

Steps to Reproduce

Pretty much any command at random, seems to be it happens more the longer the chat is. Curl is giving the worst issues.

Expected Behavior

it should realize that the terminal command is over
