Is there any way to leverage Azure AI Foundry hosted models? Azure OpenAI’s interface is limiting to only OpenAI models…
hey @IonCaza, partly yes, partly not yet: the Azure OpenAI BYOK slot works for OpenAI-format Foundry deployments, but not for Claude or other non-OpenAI model families on Foundry.
ok… I’m seeking support for non-openai models through AI Foundry (such as Claude)
Hey, thanks for the request. If I keep it short: the Azure integration in Cursor using the Azure OpenAI slot only supports OpenAI-format models that use the standard Azure OpenAI endpoint. Non OpenAI model families like Claude on Azure AI Foundry use a different API format, so they don’t connect through that slot right now.
So for Claude via Foundry, there isn’t a working path at the moment, and I can’t share a timeline for when support might be added.
This has already been requested. There’s an open feature request: Allow use of Claude models through Azure Foundry. I’d recommend liking and subscribing there so it’s tracked and you’ll get updates if anything changes.
If a specific Foundry model has an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, you can try Override OpenAI Base URL in the OpenAI API key section, but for Claude using the Anthropic format this likely won’t work. This is only for models that actually expose an OpenAI-compatible API.
Hey, I appreciate the answer. It would be an almost trivial change to allow a different ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL instead of integrating an additional interface… could you create a feature request for that?
This feature request already exists, and it’s almost exactly what you’re describing, an override for the Anthropic base URL: Request to override Anthropic Base URL
It’s better not to create a duplicate, but to collect votes in one place. Drop a like there and subscribe, and you can also add your Azure AI Foundry use case in the comments. The more specific the scenarios are, the clearer the priority is for the team.
Also keep an eye on Allow use of Claude models through Azure Foundry, it’s specifically about Claude via Foundry.
I can’t share an ETA for either, but both are being tracked.
