The window terminated unexpectedly (reason: 'oom', code: '-536870904')

I keep getting the error that I am out of memory in Cursor, whether in Chat or in Composer. This is happening very very frequently, now I basically cannot keep Cursor AI running for longer than 5 minutes, but usually less, before it crashes with this message.

Running on Windows 11, 32 GB memory, modern Nvidia card. Using default Claude Sonnet.

Have been using Cursor AI for about 4 days, started a tiny little project in C++/Vulkan as an experiment before the weekend, everything was slick.

But over time, second or third day in, and with more files in the project, Cursor AI’s UI got slower, sluggish, it also started crashing. First every hour or so, now I get crashes every few minutes, I cannot even iterate on code.

The responses from the AI are reasonably fast, that’s not an issue, the issue is really that the app itself behaves like molasses, everything super slow.

Initially, typing code or typing into the chat/composer was normal. The degradation in speed was gradual, probably as the project got to the current cca 30 files total (headers, cpp). Now trying to type into chat or composer, it takes seconds to see a character onscreen after a key press. Desperate, I started using external text editor to prepare what I will tell the AI, and then pasting it in, but even with this trick, due to frequent crashes, it’s become practically impossible to make any progress.

Tried any trick I could find, increased Windows paging file to crazy 60 GB, tried running the Cursor app with various --max-memory settings from command prompt, including values like 24 GB, nothing makes any difference.

I would suspect, based on the reported symptoms, that I am really out of memory and paging like crazy - but Windows always shows that overall memory usage in my system, including running Cursor AI, is below 20 GB (and I made sure to eventually shut down as many other apps as I could but Chrome browser).

Tried deleting cashes from AppData\Roaming\Cursor\Cache Code as well as AppData\Roaming\Cursor\Cache as suggested in some forum posts, no difference.

Ended up running with absolutely no Extensions, (only had CMake anyway), makes no difference.

Latest Cursor AI version for Windows from your website as of Jan 20 2025 - 0.44.11.

Will be happy to provide any log files if instructed so. As it is, this is the end of the road, I cannot make any progress on my project any more using Cursor AI. All fun is gone.

Thanks for inspecting my case.

Hey, check out the provided solutions here:

I have the same issues, but no solution. The stackoverflow thread does not provide ways to actually solve this problem.

0.46.8 solved the issue for me.

I am using 0.46.8, same issue.

Hi, DM’d you for some debugging info to help debug and fix.

Same… the program is pretty much useless… on windows 10
crashes all the time. Program have long stalls where everything in the ui is frozen… And I pay for this?

I encountered the same issue because I had been using the same chat session for a long time, resulting in a lot of history. The problem was resolved when I switched to a New Chat.

how does that work? I am afraid of starting a new chat as it may lose the context.

This is not helpful if you see others replies.

This problem is very annoying and what’s even more annoying is that it’s not clear how to fix it, apparently there’s a bug in the shell itself, too much information is collected over time and there’s an overload of the allocated resources, version 46.8 still has these problems, it’s very annoying.

I also have this issue on latest build (to date) 0.46.10.

same here . even more I can not load my history chat message . And … there is no response from agent at all if I tried to send my message to agent . I have to rebuild everything from 0 . :face_with_tears_of_joy:

I had the same issue. Went from 0.46 to 0.45.17. Now at least i can work on my project. Sometimes a bit slower, but its not crashing anymore.

I managed to alleviate this by making my chat create a HANDOVER.md document outlining all work done to date and any development quirks that the new AI chat should know. And then moving my project folder to another folder and reopening it in Cursor, resetting my chat history completely. I then rebriefed the AI with my handover document and its been speedy with zero crashes since! Hope that helps

Just throwing in this happens to me as well several times per day. The last time I literally opened Cursor. Started a docker container running Postgres, then started watching YouTube. And five minutes later the app crashed with the OOM message. This can’t be normal. Cursor is also unbelievably slow for me.

It’s helpful, for sure, but it has vast lag spikes and crashes constantly. My computer is a powerhouse. Was hoping to see someone figuring this out here :).

I’m having the same error here. After two days of working on a project, I can’t move forward anymore because of this issue.

It seems like something Cursor should urgently fix, rather than us having to look for workaround hacks to solve it.

This also worked for me. I tried every other way out there but none of them made any difference but this one made wonders because it also solved the problem of Cursor being laggy after working on a project for more than 3 days. Thank you so much for your contribution.
