Unable to Install SpecStory Extension via VSIX

I’m trying to install the SpecStory extension in Cursor using a .vsix file but have been unable to get it working. Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

System Info:

  • Device: Mac Studio (Apple M4 Max, 36GB RAM)
  • OS: macOS Sequoia 15.3.2
  • Cursor Version: Version: 0.47.5 VSCode Version: 1.96.2

What I’ve Tried:

  1. Checked the Cursor Extension Marketplace – SpecStory is not listed.
  2. Used Cmd + Shift + P > “Install from VSIX…” – No such option appears.
  3. Tried manually moving the .vsix file to ~/.cursor/extensions/ and restarting Cursor – No effect.
  4. Attempted installation via Terminal:
  • cursor --install-extension specstory-vscode-latest.vsix → command not found
  • code --install-extension specstory-vscode-latest.vsix → command not found
  1. Restarted Cursor after each attempt – No change.
  2. Looked through SpecStory’s docs (Install the extension - SpecStory) but didn’t find Cursor-specific install instructions.

Questions:

  • Does Cursor support installing .vsix extensions manually?
  • If so, what’s the correct way to install them?
  • If not, is there any way to use SpecStory in Cursor?

Hey, you can go to Extensions and select Install in the menu.

Well I was able to get this installed, configured. But Cursor is still crashing about once an hour.
My specs:

"@deanrie Thank you for your reply! Unfortunately, renaming the project didn’t help. An important clue is that I also started a completely new project, and after just a few hours, it began crashing as well.

I have a brand new, very powerful system, so it’s definitely not a hardware issue. And it doesn’t seem to be related to chat history either since the new project started crashing so quickly.

I’m really at a loss here and would appreciate any other advice you or others might have. I can’t be the only person experiencing this issue. Has anyone else run into similar persistent crashes with Cursor?"

I’d suggest completely reinstalling Cursor to clear its database. Be sure to save any important chat history first.

@deanrie Thanks again for the direction.
I completely reinstalled Cursor and yet it’s still crashing. Not as frequent but still enough to cause disruption. I’m beginning to think this is something that we all just have to deal with. It’s incredibly frustrating.

Hey, yes, that’s strange. Usually, this should solve the problem. Which version of Cursor are you using?
