Unable to link Cursor account – “Cursor could not start the account proof” + phone verification stuck

Hi,

I’m having persistent issues linking my accounts and can’t get past them.

Current situation:

  • On accounts.x.ai/unify, my Grok account ([email protected]) and X account (@lefeiren129) are already connected.
  • When I try to connect my Cursor account, I get the error: “Cursor could not start the account proof.”
  • Previously, when trying to link X Premium+ via “Get Access with Grok” in Grok Bot, I was stuck on phone verification.

What I’ve tried:

  • Multiple emails to support (including follow-ups with screenshots) – no reply yet
  • Incognito windows, clearing cookies, signing in first with the correct accounts
  • Trying both the old linking flow and the new unify flow

I have X Premium+ and a free Cursor account (Google email: [email protected]). The accounts use different emails, which should be allowed, but the linking keeps failing.

Could someone look into this or escalate it? The account proof error and the previous phone verification block seem to be preventing me from completing the link.

Thanks.

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

  • Account, billing & login

Describe the Bug
Unable to link my Cursor account on the accounts.x.ai/unify page. Grok and X accounts are already connected, but clicking “Connect” on Cursor fails with the error: “Cursor could not start the account proof.”

Previously, attempting to link X Premium+ via “Get Access with Grok” in Grok Bot also got stuck on phone verification. Multiple support emails have received no reply.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Go to the unify page
  2. Sign in so that Grok ([email protected]) and X (@lefeiren129) show as connected
  3. Click the “Connect” button next to Cursor
  4. The error “Cursor could not start the account proof” appears and the link fails

Expected Behavior
The Cursor account should connect successfully, allowing the accounts to be unified (or the previous phone verification block should be cleared so linking can complete).

Screenshots / Screen Recordings
[Please attach the screenshots of the unify page and the error message]

Operating System

  • MacOS

Version Information
N/A (this is happening on the web unify page, not inside the Cursor IDE)

Additional Information

  • Cursor account email: [email protected] (free tier, Google login)
  • Grok / X side uses Hotmail email + X Premium+
  • Different emails should be allowed according to the docs, but linking keeps failing
  • Already sent multiple emails to support with screenshots — no response yet
  • Tried incognito, clearing cookies, and both the old linking flow and the new unify flow

Does this stop you from using Cursor?

  • No - Cursor works, but with this issue
(The main problem is that I cannot complete the account link to use my X Premium+ benefits with Grok Bot.)

I got exactly the same problem. Please fix this as it block the unify subscription.

my problems are already fixed , thanks a lot!

Hey @lefei_zhang, thanks for the follow up!

@Mille_C, I couldn’t match your attempt to an account yet. Could you send an email to [email protected]?

Couldn’t locate my attempts? not sure is it because I have different xAI and Cursor email?

Anyway I had sent my case to [email protected] @Colin

email sent, and team is following.

But i just wonder how special is my account that it seems the issue only happen on me.

Title: T-I22358 — Paid on Oct 23, still shows Free, support says “no timeline” and refuses refund

Paid for The X Subscription (Premium) on Oct 23. The unify flow hung at “Step 2 of 4” (button did nothing), but the charge went through. Support confirmed the switch is complete and that “Premium is active through 23 Nov”.

Five days later, Cursor still shows Free on my account. Support’s response, verbatim: “Cursor can still show Free while that access issue is open. I can’t share a timeline for the fix.” and “I’m not able to process a refund… That decision stands.”

So: money taken, service not delivered, no ETA, no refund path. Ticket T-I22358.

@Colin — can someone from the team actually look at this? A paid user being told “wait indefinitely, no refund” isn’t a support outcome. Happy to provide account details and screenshots.

Others in this thread: if you were also charged by a flow that appeared to hang, check your billing page — you may be paying for something you can’t use.

@Colin , same unify problem here. Please look into this account as well.

Paid Grok Premium Oct 20. On the unify page, Grok is connected but Cursor will not finish linking. Cursor still shows Free, reason not_linked. Grok sign-in works, Cursor SSO fails with a temporarily unavailable sign-in error, Error ID 145efed7-d15d-4bbb-baea-12f94e02599e.

One week, ticket T-H91868, only automated Sam replies, no human fix, no timeline. I am extremely disappointed.

Can Cursor get a human to look into the ticket?
