0.48 removed workbench.activityBar.orientation

@truell20 Michael you should take a look.

Yes, they removed this option probably because they didn’t want to fix the UI bug reported by users. This is really a bit ironic, although I am reluctant to speculate like this.

If the original options of vscode do not hinder cursor from adding its own features, please do not modify them randomly. Many users are also original vscode users and do not want to change their habits because of cursor.

Why ?! Why Cursor? Do you not have a QA Team? Do you not have a community team?? Who asked for this change anyway? Quit burning VC money, and make this product stable.

We are NOT here for your IDE, not by a long shot - We are here because you are a gate keeper to code generation, and it will not be long before there are others on par with you. Focus on the AI side of things, we care not for the look. Do not take away what we already have and give us nothing in return.

+1 This is a mistake. Please reinstate the vertical orientation. Staying on v0.47 until this is fixed.

just came here to create a post about this. I am sure that the cursor team will address this and bring back the ability to switch.

Cursor always likes to make such modifications that waste everyone’s time. Copilot Chat has also been blocked by them. I was originally very happy about the new features, but then I found that I couldn’t use them at all.

I originally used Cursor to improve efficiency, but now I waste time on these messy things every day

Hey all, I believe this may have been removed due to rendering issues we were seeing, but I’ll bring this up with the team and have more info in a few hours!

Hey, I downgraded to 0.47.9 because I want the Activity Bar to stay vertical. They just removed the setting, unbelievable!

They deleted the code to fix the bug. If they were capable of referring to relevant information, this wouldn’t have happened.

Please recall that Google once had an AI tool for automatically fixing bugs. As a result, the AI deleted the code and naturally the bugs disappeared.

Their success isn’t due to how amazing their work is. Instead, they quickly integrated Claude and attracted a group of users with free services. They’ve invested too much cost in this, to the extent that they need to charge twice the fee for ‘thinking’ and a ridiculously high ‘tools’ fee for ‘max’.

Same here, I have downgraded and will not go forth until this change is addressed. I rather have GUI bugs (which I did not have any) than not having this.

I hope this will be address soon.

This might be the actual change that makes me go back to VSCode

  • We have removed costs of models
  • We have removed the ability to install GH Copilot
  • We have removed the opportunity to change the activity bar orientation
    – You are here –

+1 point for moving to Windsurf.

Even if this is a problem, the solution should not be to remove it and move on, as this removed feature provides ease of use and is one of the most important interface features of the application.

Totally Agree!

Simple like that!

This setting was literally the first thing I changed when I started using Cursor. The IDE is very personal and people get used to a certain layout which is very hard to adjust away from when you have been using for a long time. Reducing friction of switching to Cursor from another IDE by allowing you to customize it how you like should be a priority in my opinion.

The fact it seems it was removed because of a bug, rather than just fixing the bug is not a good solution.

+1, what was the point of that removing that option?

At the moment, the download button on the site leads to 0.47.8 if you want to revert. In case that changes, here’s the link:

https://downloads.cursor.com/production/82ef0f61c01d079d1b7e5ab04d88499d5af500e3/win32/x64/user-setup/CursorUserSetup-x64-0.47.8.exe

I downloaded it, disabled updates before installing, then installed it over 0.48.0 to revert the change but ngl it’s stupid this is even necessary and if it gets forced I’m probably going cancel my subscription and return to VSCode as well.

Very annoying to have to worry about updates removing functionality and hindering productivity to the degree that I can no longer trust automatic updates without having a way to revert.
