Adding New Models

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Unable to add models in cursor.

Steps to Reproduce

When configuring custom API parameters under Settings $\rightarrow$ Models $\rightarrow$ OpenAI API Key, entering a valid API key and overriding the Base URL (tested with both OpenRouter and official DeepSeek endpoints) fails to save correctly or populate the custom model identifiers in the Agent/Composer dropdown list.Steps to Reproduce:Open Cursor Settings (Cmd + , or Ctrl + ,) and navigate to Models.Locate the OpenAI API Key section and paste a valid API key (e.g., OpenRouter sk-or-v1-… or DeepSeek sk-…).Toggle ON Use OpenAI API Key.Toggle ON Override OpenAI Base URL and enter a valid endpoint:Tested with OpenRouter: https://openrouter.ai/api/v1/cursorTested with DeepSeek: https://api.deepseek.comScroll to Model Names, click + Add Model, and add the target identifier (e.g., deepseek-chat or deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash).Close Settings and open the Composer/Agent panel (Cmd + I or Ctrl + I).Open the Model Selector dropdown.Expected Behavior:
The settings should save automatically, and the custom added model identifier should appear as an option in the Composer/Agent model selector dropdown.Actual Behavior:
The inputs do not register/save properly, no confirmation status appears, and the newly added models do not show up in the Composer/Agent model dropdown list.

Expected Behavior

Behavior is no models getting loadded from OPenrouter or Deepseek, if there something lese let me know how to add more models.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

A few things worth checking before this goes to staff:

  1. Plan: on The X Subscription, Plus doesn’t include your own API keys or third-party models. Premium and up do.
  2. The documented providers for your own key are OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Azure OpenAI, and AWS Bedrock. OpenRouter and DeepSeek aren’t on that list, and the docs don’t cover overriding the OpenAI base URL, so that route may just not work rn.
  3. If you keep trying the override, OpenRouter’s own docs use https://openrouter.ai/api/v1 as the base URL, without the /cursor on the end.

Also worth knowing, your own keys only work for chat models. Tab keeps using Cursor’s built-in ones.

The supported providers and how to add a key are on the BYOK help page: Bring your own API key | Cursor Docs
