All automations are stopping early as of today, but ran to completion previously

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Somewhere else…

Describe the Bug

I have set up several Cursor Automations using the default Codex 5.3 High. Yesterday, and for the previous couple weeks since I set them up, they were working fine. But today, automations across all of my templates are ending early after about 1 minute. They’ll say something like “next I’m checking prior PR review threads/comments from earlier automation runs” right before they stop.

Examples:

If I reply to the agent and ask “Why did you stop?” it will make up some nonsensical reason or just say something like “sorry, would you like me to continue?”

Steps to Reproduce

Expected Behavior

Automations run to completion

Operating System

MacOS

Version Information

For AI issues: which model did you use?

Codex 5.3 High

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

Hi Isaac!

We’re aware of an issue that started recently affecting Codex 5.3, where the model is prematurely stopping after just a few steps rather than completing the task. Our team is actively investigating this with the model provider.

Workaround: Try switching your automations to GPT 5.4. Another user experiencing the same issue confirmed this resolves it.
