Am I going crazy, cannot open more than one file (side-by-side) in the same editor? This is killer

Hi @Agentgill ,
Just to be clear, are you referring to the grid editor layout?
https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/getstarted/userinterface#_grid-editor-layout
Edit:
I just checked in my own environment (Windows, Cursor 0.40.3
), and if you click and drag the file tab around the editor interface, you will see suggestions for how you can split up the editor space.
You can also follow this menu navigation path:
Cursor
> View
> Editor Layout
No, not the grid, that works fine. Multiple files within the same grid, I cannot open multiple files, not split/gird - thanks
Hi @Agentgill ,
Apologies if I am misunderstanding you, but in your original image it seems you do have two files open - package-lock.json
and package.json
.
And if you are not specifically interested in the ‘split layout’ editor, I am not sure what the desired behaviour is.
If its not too much hassle, can you find a screenshot from somewhere else on the web that shows the desired behaviour?
If not, sorry I couldn’t assist, but I’m sure someone else here will be able to.
Edit:
Is this more relevant?
https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/getstarted/userinterface#_side-by-side-editing
I think the term is opening files as tabs within the same editor window. That’s the part I’m missing. Thanks for your help, btw. I’m facing more VSCode issues. I’ve never reinstalled my Mac for like three years, including VSCode, and my configuration probably has a ton of nuanced configurations which I can’t remember how they got there.
Hi @Agentgill ,
I googled this:
vs code opening files as tabs within the same editor window
and the second result was this:
https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/getstarted/userinterface#_tabs
Are we getting closer?
If not, I might stop replying, as I may be providing more hindrance than help .
If you can find a screenshot of the desired behaviour somewhere on the web, that may assist someone else here point you in the right direction.
I just went VS Code Import and it solved it. Your link was exactly it. Thanks for your help. I’ve been scanning through some of the forums and quite a few issues similar, the activities bar default was another one. My workflow is good now which means I am focus back on coding and seeing how cursor can help me.
Excellent, good to hear.
in case it helps, here is a post that contains some more ‘introductory’ information about Cursor that may be of assistance when getting started:
And, one thing that new Pro subscription users often do, is burn through their ‘fast-premium’ requests when learning how Cursor works etc.
So, to avoid that, when getting started, remember that the gpt-4o-mini
model is considered a ‘non-premium’ model:
So you may like to switch to that when testing.
Also remember, Pro users get an additional 10 ‘long-chat’ model requests per day, as defined when logged in at https://www.cursor.com/settings
So make sure to take advantage of them as well.
