Auto-Scroll to Latest Message When Switching Between Conversations

Feature request for product/service

Chat

Describe the request

Current Behavior:
When switching between different conversations in Cursor, the chat view always starts at the top of the conversation. This requires manual scrolling to reach the latest messages, which is inefficient when working with multiple ongoing conversations.

Proposed Solution:
Add an option to automatically scroll to the latest message when opening a conversation, similar to how many chat applications work.

Suggested Implementation:

  • Add a setting in Preferences/Settings: “Auto-scroll to latest message in conversations”
  • When enabled, conversations should open at the bottom (latest message) by default
  • Optionally, provide a keyboard shortcut to toggle this behavior
  • Consider making this the default behavior, with an option to disable it for users who prefer the current top-scroll behavior

Use Case:
When working on multiple projects or having several ongoing conversations, users frequently need to see the most recent context rather than starting from the beginning of each conversation. This would significantly improve workflow efficiency.

Priority: Medium - Would significantly improve workflow efficiency for users managing multiple conversations.

Additional Notes:
This is a common UX pattern in modern chat applications and would make Cursor’s conversation management more intuitive and efficient.

Sometimes the autoscroll to the bottom works, but very often (and randomly) it doesn’t, unfortunately.
