Just wanted to say how amazing Claude Dev is! I have been using that to get a project started till I run out of my API tokens for the day and then start with Cursor. I’m a big fan! I’m a big fan of Aider as well. I would be willing to pay extra for Aider and Claude Dev embedded into Cursor and tied to our monthly usage. I’d buy a 5000 plus a month pack! Thanks!
How is it compared to composer
@msc ,
Out of interest, when you say ‘Claude Dev’ are you referring to this?
https://github.com/saoudrizwan/claude-dev
And, just because it seems related, I saw a user recently posted about something called ‘Claude Engineer’ - is that similar?
Also, I haven’t tried it, but since Aider is a command line tool (https://aider.chat), couldn’t it just be used within Cursor?
Disclaimer - I have no idea if that would create conflicts of some sort, so investigate at your own risk if that is what you want to do.
Gosh, there is lots happening in this space (feeling a little bit of FOMO), and it is interesting to see the use-case patterns and required features that are emerging!
Need to stay focussed on my actual coding projects at the same time though!
Ok, I have just spent time with Composer and it is working really well almost like Aider, but not quit as big of a token count, which is nice because I burn through my daily tokens quick. This is very much like Aider and Claude Dev. I have not tried Claude Engineer yet. Aider can make a long term plan and then implement on it and keep track of what’s going on. Great work Cursor Team!
@msc just a friendly fyi that you may come across some undesired behaviour in Composer (Ctrl
+ I
) occasionally as it is still beta, but it is tracking in the right direction and exciting lots of users with its current multi-file create and edit functionality and its potential!
Aider in Cursor:
install aider
add the Aider extension https://marketplace.cursorapi.com/items?itemName=MattFlower.aider
Ok guys. I am back after trying Claude Dev, Composer and Aider in the terminal.
1 - Claude Dev - Is pretty cool in that it can run up to 20 times, but it has issues the same as with the Anthropic Chat, and the Cursor global searching feature It will get bogged down in token count and you need to start a new chat to get things running fast again or getting dinged for too many tokens uploaded to Anthropic. It has a few weird things like I cannot seem to get the Dev and the Explorer to view at the same time, but that might be skill issues from my end.
2 - Aider - So far, Aider has been single shot type agentic system that will go down and do a 10 step plan perfectly, but again it can get over worked with the token count and run out of API tokens for the day. It does have feature to add folders, files, start over where we left of, etc…I am just getting it going in the terminal right now to use with Cursor.
3 - I’m really enjoying Composer! It is doing similar things as Aider fairly well and does not seem to be getting bogged down with the token count, but it is getting lost in larger code bases, even with cursorignore set up and just looking at the code. I look forward to the improvements!
4 - Claude Engineer - I’ll look at this this week.
Thanks for the review. Please keep us posted. Would be useful for the team probably to have specific feedback on where and how it gets bogged down
