Close but no Cigar

I think Cursor is on the right track but I am not worried about AI taking anyone’s job anytime soon. Some of the issues I noticed are crazy. I am pushing this thing to the limit with some difficult data pipeline work. For the Cursor team, the Composer losses “context” and just starts creating new tables or ignoring constraints. I understand this is a new product so there will be issues like that.

The IDE hangs. No, its not because I am getting throttled its because the IDE seems to be stressed and handling too much or not releasing resources correctly, idk.

The pricing isn’t really fair because the Agent causes problems in one way or another and then uses up your rate limits to fix the issues it creates.

You have to keep it focused. This is no “one button click” application. I know Cursor doesn’t claim it to be but don’t be fooled. If you don’t know how to code, this thing will not do more than very focused use cases.

Overall, Cursor is a great tool that can help you find bugs and solve problems it is not a replacement for a good software engineer and until it can do spacial reasoning it never will be. Actually, that is more of a critique of AI than Cursor. Cursor has done a great job with what it has available.

I think in time Cursor will iron out the kinks and has a good shot of getting bought by a Microsoft type company. Keep your expectations reasonable.

Forgot to mention, the IDE just crashes sometimes. When that happens, all hope is lost

Now the IDE is crashing about every 5 minutes. Just hangs and then STB.

To be fair, as a new tool - it does require you to understand how to use it. Seems obvious but I have caused some of the problems by not being specific. There are a lot of my own errors.

My Experience too

This is happening almost every minute while the agent is working. After this happens, its a ■■■■ shoot as to whether or not the context is known to the agent. So, if it happens be prepared to re-explain everything. I keep a note pad to the side for such things. Yes, I know there is a notepad in the IDE but it doesn’t seem to add any value and the UI is consuming enough resources as it is

The torchum never stops

5 minutes later:

I have 64 GB RAM on a Mac Pro Studio - my machine is more than beefy

The very next command:

I checked for updates but none are available

This is a toy. Not ready for real-world applications - I’m out

How often do you create new composer/chat threads? We’ve noticed that users who always add messages to the same thread have had more performance issues.

Happy to also hop on a call and try to debug if you have time, we’re not able to reproduce the crashes locally and are trying to get hunt them down and fix them.

For data analaysis and pipelines. Try palantir or deepnote and thank me later . Cursor is not ideal for such complex tasks. Cursor is mostly acceptable for web development

I am having a similar experience. Cursor is eating a lot of memory
