Composer stopped working (Pro)

Hello,

I recently updated to Cursor Version: 0.39.5 and Composer stopped working completely. After submitting any prompt, it says ‘Generating’ and then immediately ‘Complete’ without displaying any results or changes. This happens both with Sonnet 3.5 and GPT4o.

AI Chat works well, it’s only Composer that does not work.

I’m on MacOS Sonoma 14.5, Apple Studio M2 Max with 32GB RAM. I recently upgraded to Pro and was actually very happy with Copilot and Composer.

I would appreciate any help with this, thanks!

Hi @alex235 ,

Just to get some more troubleshooting information, if you:

  • Bring up developer tools console via:

Cursor > Help > Toggle Developer Tools and then click the Console tab

  • And then perform the action that is causing the undesired behaviour

Do you see any error messages?

You could also copy/paste additional system info from:

Cursor > Help > About

For topic reference, similar behavior has been reported in posts like these:

And there has been some general comments about the nature of Composer as beta functionality and that some undesired behaviour occurs occasionally and is rectified in subsequent releases etc:

Again, just for reference, if any actual crashes occur, you can follow the steps here to provide a crash report:

I have the same issue. No console logs at all:

Also it counts towards fast usage quota even if it does not output anything. This was all working fine yesterday

Also as a side note, it seems applying things from chat does not work properly also…

I have the same issue.
Three hours ago it was working fine.

The difference between three hours ago and now is that I cancelled an additional high-speed request once purchased.
I am now on a PRO plan subscription, but with a low speed request.
I have confirmed that this problem is not an environmental difference by testing the Composer functionality from another PC as well.
(It didn’t work on another PC either)

Sorry for this, fixing right now

Hi @shaoruu ,

The Download button on cursor.com is still showing the download for 0.39.5 for me.

Wouldn’t the new version be 0.39.6?

Hi @litecode,

I don’t think we’ve released v0.39.6 yet, it was a backend fix

Hm… from time to time I am still running into the error, that composer just hangs on “Generating …” and nothing gets produced. I’m running latest cursor (0.39.6) with Pro license, using claude sonnet (without my own API key). I don’t see any error logs in the developer tools.

What might cause this?

How many files / how many lines are in the files? It could take a bit of time to load if too many files are referenced at the same time

I have the same issue with the composer just showing “Generating …” and nothing happens. Restarting does not help, console and logs show nothing.

I have 1-2 files referenced in a 4 liner prompt and neither “Submit” nor “With Codebase” works.

After some time it works again.

I also tried to remove / enable personal keys. I’m on a Pro subscription.

Hi @philippreiner,

Which model were you using?

I tried both - either directly mentioning the files - the files itself are quite small, maybe 100-200 LOC. And also chat with code base has the same issue.

GPT-4o or Claude-3.5-Sonnet. Also tried others.
It the same behavior.
CMD+K and Chat works.

Also tried it on a small project (NextJS starter template) and same issue.

I’m on the latest 0.39.6 version

Update: Still not working but I can reproduce a little bit.

One some “random” files it immediately stops. I can’t understand which files.

If I select a total different task and set of (related files) it then works again.
it then also works for the task and files from before again.

Let me know if I can further help to debug this.

I accidentally closed out Cursor altogether and when I came back, it stopped working and just keeps saying “Completed” and doesn’t give any option to apply

Not working for me either. Used to be stuck on Generating… but not it just switches to Complete without anything.

Which version are you on?
