Cursor Agent repeatedly returns empty responses across desktop and mobile

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

I’m repeatedly receiving:

“The model returned an empty response. Retrying automatically…”

This is happening across chats and model selections, including Auto.

Request ID: be9c47ef-add6-48c0-bad9-ff30afcc06fa

Troubleshooting already performed:

Windows Cursor desktop affected
Cursor mobile also experienced the same empty-response behavior
Tested different model selections, including Auto
Changed HTTP Compatibility Mode from HTTP/2 to HTTP/1.1
Completely restarted Cursor
After restarting, Network Diagnostics showed all green
Created a brand-new Agent chat and sent “hello”
Agent responded immediately
The empty-response problem subsequently returned
Running Network Diagnostics afterward showed:
DNS: No response
SSL: No provider
Authentication UI: No response from DNS lookup
Cursor Tab: No response from DNS lookup
Agent Endpoint: No response from DNS lookup
API, Ping, Chat, Agent, Marketplace, Authentication, Downloads, and CDN continued to pass

Since the behavior has occurred on both desktop and mobile and persists across model selections, could someone from Cursor please trace the Request ID and determine whether the request is failing in the Agent/model backend or account routing?

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Cursor IDE on Windows.

  2. Open any repository/project.

  3. Start a new Agent chat.

  4. Enter a simple prompt such as “hello” or a normal coding request.

  5. Agent begins processing but eventually displays: “The model returned an empty response. Retrying automatically…”

  6. The automatic retry does not resolve the issue.

  7. Starting another chat or switching models, including Auto, produces the same behavior.

  8. Completely restarting Cursor may temporarily restore Agent functionality, but the problem returns.

  9. When Cursor is first restarted, Network Diagnostics may show all tests green. After the issue occurs, running Network Diagnostics again can show DNS, SSL, Authentication UI, Cursor Tab, and Agent Endpoint failures.

The issue has also occurred in the Cursor mobile app, and multiple model selections have been tested.

Expected Behavior

Cursor Agent should return a normal model response when I submit a prompt. Agent should remain functional across subsequent messages without returning an empty response or requiring Cursor to be restarted.

For AI issues: which model did you use?

Multiple models tested, including Auto. The same empty-response behavior occurs regardless of model selection.

Additional Information

The problem is intermittent but repeatedly returns. After completely restarting Cursor and changing HTTP Compatibility Mode from HTTP/2 to HTTP/1.1, Network Diagnostics initially showed all tests green.

I then created a brand-new Agent chat and sent “hello.” Agent responded immediately. Afterward, the empty-response problem returned.

Running Network Diagnostics again showed:

DNS: No response
SSL: No provider
Authentication UI: No response from DNS lookup
Cursor Tab: No response from DNS lookup
Agent Endpoint: No response from DNS lookup

API, Ping, Chat, Agent, Marketplace, Authentication, Downloads, and CDN continued to pass.

I have also experienced similar empty-response behavior in the Cursor mobile app, so the issue does not appear to be isolated to this Windows installation.

I have tested multiple model selections, including Auto, with the same result. I’ve even tried the browser agent in Chrome Browser, and I get the same reponse empty message.

Restarting Cursor can temporarily restore functionality, but the issue returns.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

Hey there - thanks for the request IDs.

This was a temporary Cursor Grok 4.5 empty-response issue on August 8 (also via Auto). It was mitigated the same day, so you should be good now. If it still happens, pick an explicit non-Grok model and start a fresh chat.

The Network Diagnostics DNS/SSL flakes are separate and weren’t what caused the empty responses.

Thank you very much! You are correct it is working now.
