Cursor IDE poor performance on v2.0 and v2.1

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

First of all the specs:
Macbook M2 Pro 16gb - OS: macOS 26.0.1 25A362 arm64

Was using v1.7 just fine till today when I was prompt to update as my version was too old, so I did it, only to face a poor performance on v2.1 (switched to v2.0 later but was the same). There was a lot of lag and stutter when scrolling on both the Editor pane and the Secondary sidebar (Chat/Agent), also tried disable all extensions and cursor --disable-extensions but the problem persist. Got back to v1.7 where everything is fast and zero performance issues.

Steps to Reproduce

Just compare the performance when scrolling through a medium sized file, and a normal interaction with Cursor agent mode between v2.1 and v1.7 using a ARM Macbook.

Operating System

MacOS

Current Cursor Version (Menu → About Cursor → Copy)

I don’t have anymore the v2.1…

Hey, thanks for the report. Similar performance issues were reported in nightly v2.1 builds and were fixed there. Let’s collect a bit of diagnostic info to understand what’s happening in your case:

Quick diagnostics:

  • Open Activity Monitor (Applications → Utilities), sort by CPU, and share a screenshot showing all Cursor processes when the lag happens.
  • In Cursor v2.1.x, press CMD+Shift+P → run “Developer: Open Process Explorer” and share a screenshot of that too.
  • Which exact v2.1 build were you using? If you can briefly reinstall v2.1, please copy the version from Menu → About Cursor.

It would also be helpful to know:

  • Does the slowdown start right away, or does it build up over time?
  • Does scrolling lag in all files or only in larger ones?

This will help us see whether it’s tied to a specific process or to the renderer.

I experienced similar issues. I have downloaded latest version and installed in over old version. After closer look I had in Applications folder Cursor app dated at 1980 and Intel based. Had to remove it first and install again. Solved for me.
