Cursor is extremely slow

Hello guys, it has been a couple of days that Cursor is barely usable. The chat does not process the request and I cannot even click any button in the Ui withotuh making the interface freeze. Do you know what are the potential issues? I have not many extension at the moment, and I do not knwo if it is a server problem or something. I have Cursor Pro

Hey @Recognify, sorry you’re experiencing these performance issues.

Please provide more information that would help narrow down the cause.

  • Cursor Version
  • OS and number
  • Which model and chat mode are you using?
  • Have you used up your 500 monthly requests?
  • Does this occur on a new chat as well, without adding files?

If possible, post the Request ID with privacy disabled for that new request so the Cursor team can investigate.

Hey, does this also happen in other projects?

+1
typing, scrolling… everything is a mess since a few months.

Can we please have a Cursor-moderated, central, sticky thread with someone really looking into this? The forum keeps piling up with these kind of posts since weeks, indicating a fundamental problem. Honestly, I do not want to look into all these posts in the hope of finding a solution. Spoiler: never found one so far.

I would really appreciate driving this towards a channeled, focussed, and transparent communication.

It’s the same for me—very laggy.
This has happened on my end sometimes from version 0.50 to 1.0.
What should I do?
I just restart the cursor, and it fixes the issue.

Do other projects also cause Cursor to lag?

I did not have a single problem until 2 days ago. and it works on a specific project (27 GB). Not on new or lighter projects. But the project didn’t get bigger these past 2 days, so It is not dependent on size I guess. Maybe some package is messing up, but I do not really know how

Try the below

yes, my UI gets less and less responsive as time goes on

but task manager doesn’t report any problems

1Gb RAM out of 32Gb and 10% CPU

This is most likely due to terminal tool rendering:

Been experiencing the same issue for months. Unsubscribed from Cursor, moved to Zed. Zed is quick but the tab suggestions are awful, and the debugger has tons of issues. So now I’m stuck between fast-but-ugh and ugh-but-good.

This is my ‘top’ output after enough idle time:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND

21428 travis 20 0 1161.8g 340168 132724 S 11.6 1.0 2:30.68 cursor

This is after I change any file at all.

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND

21370 travis 20 0 1165.3g 542508 109420 S 131.8 1.7 17:24.01 cursor
21565 travis 20 0 1161.6g 1.3g 110856 S 107.0 4.1 26:36.46 cursor
21322 travis 20 0 32.9g 128828 70592 R 74.2 0.4 13:59.78 cursor

That’s 1 cursor process at 11.6% CPU to 3 at 131%, 107% and 74% CPU because I changed 1 character in 1 file. This happens when cursor shows ‘x files to analyze’ in the bottom bar, which happens when any file is changed, and it lasts like 30s-1min after any change at all. So bad.

I removed just about every extension I had. Also learnt that Cursor uses its own Python language server that you can’t change.

Some attention on this would be great. Even sent a recording of how slow it is to ‘Michael’ when I cancelled my subscription and they asked why - no response. Frustrating issue.

@Travis_Weedon I suggest a separate full bug report so your issue can be analyzed as it is not a common occurrence. Include your version and Help > Open Process Explorer to see what consumes the resources.
