Why is typing in chat window so slow?

I like cursor a lot. But when I type into the ai chat window the typing is very slow. It is lagging as though it has a delay between each keypress. Why is it this way and how to stop it?

I don’t think this is a system-wide issue (or if it is, it’s a bug) since I haven’t noticed the same in my chat window.

Have you tried:

  1. Restarting the app and your computer
  2. Verifying you have a stable internet connection and aren’t in any kind of low power mode
  3. Checking your resource usage to see if any apps (including Cursor) are taking up a lot of CPU and/or memory

Sorry, I realise these are rather generic. Just solves a surprising amount of issues.

Thanks. Those are not my problems but interestingly when I type in the chat window the CPU spikes on each keystroke with multiple processes.

Hey, does the same happen if you run Cursor without extensions enabled, using cursor --disable-extensions?

Having the same issue, i’m running with disable-extensions. Deleted my cache.
Here’s a flame graph

@jake the Cursor Helper (Renderer) process is out of control

Here’s have stored a Trace.json for the performance trace (flame graph) from dev tools. Not sure how useful it is without the symbols. But ping me and I can share with you. Or if there are particular logs you’d like me to look at

this seems like a new issue since the last update, it takes upwards of 2 minutes or more to get a reply whereas before it was faster almost instant. it’s painful indeed

Sorry for the hassle nav. Have you got shadow workspace enabled?

I don’t have this issue, Cursor is running smoothly.

Nope (on shadow workspaces).

But fixed for me as of now: I ended up deleting Cursor entirely, and installed from a fresh installer.

This might have coincided with last night’s release(?). Because I went from version 0.44.* to 0.45. Problem seems to be gone for now!

Thanks for checking back in.

No problem. Thank you for posting your solution

You don’t know how you made my life easier. It was very annoying to use the cursor knowing that I would have to wait for each typing.

Thanks for this solution, it worked for me.

I have the exact same issue. Sometimes it lags 3-4 secs between typing and doing anything.
Been trying to google this and looking in the forum I see this issue a few other places.

I’ve done the common things:

  • Reinstalled Cursor
  • Disabled Cursor tab
  • Started in safe mode with cursor --disable-extensions
  • Started new Composer conversation
No luck with any of it.

I’m literally considering moving to Github Copilot since the lag is impossible to work with.

It’s been like this for me ever since 0.45.
