Cursor Performance issue long Buffering Moment

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

This issue occurs in Cursor IDE every time I open the app. It opens and then buffers for a long time, freezing the application with the spinning wheel of death. After it finishes buffering, the application itself runs sluggishly. This is happening on a Mac Pro with an M4 chip.

Steps to Reproduce

not sure now to reproduce it since it just happens on open.

Operating System

MacOS

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Sometimes - I can sometimes use Cursor

Hey, thanks for the report. This issue is related to the Nightly build (2.5.0-pre.16). Nightly builds can have regressions that aren’t in the stable version.

Let’s try to diagnose it:

1. Check extensions (they often cause startup freezes):

  • VS Code settings: Application > Experimental > Extension Monitor
  • Cmd + Shift + P > Developer: Open Extension Monitor
  • See what’s using CPU during startup
  • Or try running cursor --disable-extensions in Terminal. If it runs fast, extensions are the cause

2. Switch to the stable version:

  • Cursor Settings > Beta > Switch to Stable
  • Nightly builds are unstable by design

3. If it still happens, please share:

  • Cmd + Shift + P > Developer: Open Process Explorer (a screenshot while it’s slow)
  • Activity Monitor: CPU and RAM usage for Cursor processes
  • Workspace size (number of files and folders)

It might be related to indexing a large project or some git operations on startup. Let me know how it goes on the stable version.

Hi Dean,

I’ll give it a try this weekend and see if that works and if not I’ll try to get more data for you on what might be happening. Thank you for the suggestion :victory_hand:t2::heart_hands:t3:.
